Job Description

The YMCA of Honolulu has over 150 years of history built on working to help people of all ages and backgrounds become stronger in spirit, mind and body; offering programs and services to create a stronger community. The YMCA of Honolulu owns or operates nine YMCA facilities including a resident and day camp on the beautiful north shore of Oahu. The current CEO is retiring after 10 years in this position. The board seeks a new CEO that will have the ability to inspire and motivate staff & key constituencies to engage in the YMCA’s vision & core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and diversity. In addition, this individual must be able to provide strategic direction--overseeing financial stability, developing community and philanthropic relations, identifying the critical needs of the organization; successfully navigating through these pandemic impacted times. The board’s expectations are for the CEO to focus on the following:

  • Provides support and leadership to the Board of Directors as its executive officer; implements policies, plans & directives and reports to the Board on matters affecting the welfare of the Association.
  • Works to ensure the YMCA is top of mind in the community; serves as the leader in the philanthropic efforts.
  • Oversees YMCA operations and programs; works with the Board to anticipate and address community needs.
  • Serves as an ambassador for the YMCA; communicates and collaborates with government, schools, other not-for-profits, corporations and other organizations in the community, the YMCA’s mission, vision, goals and values.
  • Proactively develops and maintains strong relationships with key community leaders, influencers and government officials within the local community and the Association.
  • Provides leadership in securing needed resources for current operations, capital improvement, community development and programs to ensure long range financial stability and program success.
  • Reviews all aspects of the YMCA’s operating plan, fiscal policies and procedures to ensure prudent fiscal management. Recommends annual budget for Board approval. Implements the annual budget to ensure that the YMCA consistently operates on a balanced budget or surplus.
  • Oversees financial operations; promotes solid financial development with annual capital campaigns.
  • Communicates to Staff the organization’s commitment to protect their youth from abuse. Reports essential abuse risk management information to the Board of Directors.
  • Keeps up with new community developments & issues that may impact the future success of the YMCA. Offers new ideas, technology advantages, latest trends & community developments to the Association.
  • Interprets the mission, vision, values and goals of the Association and translates them into meaningful programs and initiatives.
  • Fully engaging and activating our Metro and branch boards to tap into community talent and passion.
  • Restoring membership and participant levels to pre-COVID numbers and planning for increases in the future

ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY

Our Metropolitan Office is located at 1441 Pali Highway which is also the home of the largest YMCA branch on the island, the Nuuanu YMCA Branch. It is walking distance from the heart of “downtown”, Honolulu’s business district where the State Capital, government offices and major business offices are located. Oahu is the third largest island in the state of Hawaii.

Qualifications

  1. Accredited 4-year college degree
  2. Minimum 10 years of broad management experience, preferably in the YMCA and/or not-for-profit sector; including strategic planning, staff, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development, and multi-site operations.
  3. Senior-level experience in running another Y Association with multiple branches OR

3a. Senior-level position in large membership-based organization OR

3b. Senior-level position in similar-size local non-profit, for-profit, or governmental organization

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  1. Master’s degree from accredited university
  2. Five to seven years of CEO or Senior Management experience preferred.
  3. Executive with proven leadership skill and YMCA Senior Director status or YMCA Organizational Leader certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification will have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).

The board believes its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities that will permit him or her to achieve excellence in the following roles:

  • Community Engagement

To become fully engaged in the YMCA of Honolulu’s mission, vision, values and goals; serving as our face, voice, and advocate in the community. Understands the philanthropic, political, and business environments and seeks collaborative opportunities to further our mission and funding; becoming a peer to other senior civic leaders in our operating areas.

  • Innovation

To bring fresh new thinking to a well-established and well-respected organization, building on a solid foundation while implementing change for long-term sustainability and relevancy; a “big thinker” and a problem solver.

  • Mission Delivery

Embraces the Y mission and can evaluate efficacy and relevancy of programs, finding funds as necessary, and collaborating with other non-profits when shifts in programming are needed.

  • Communications

Skilled at two-way communications in all levels: internally throughout the organization and externally in all communities and media platforms. Can articulate the Y mission and vision so all audiences understand and support; is open and transparent with all staff members; is a good listener in the community and in the organization.

  • Diversity

Assures diversity at all levels: managers, staff, board, volunteers, programs. Believes diversity includes age, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status as well as race. Ensures branch staff mirrors the communities they serve. Actively engages with minority organizations.

  • Leadership

Gains trust and respect internally and externally; motivates all staff members; develop career paths and provide appropriate training and feedback for growth and enjoyment. Relies on branch managers and frequently visits their communities to understand challenges, listen to community needs, and to support team efforts.

  • Management

Demonstrated experience in operations, fundraising, accounting, human resources, and facilities management in order to supervise and appropriately staff those functions

  • Philanthropy

Establish and lead a culture of philanthropy; maintaining year-round relationships with donors; seeking new and innovative funding sources and opportunities; positioning the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors and clearly communicating the Y’s status as a non-profit organization and charitable mission.

  • Financial Stewardship

Ensure the Association’s financial resources are properly managed and effectively report the organization’s financial position to all relevant stakeholders. Use high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability while consistently leading organization to surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions while controlling costs. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.

Residency Expectation:Must reside on Oahu.

Salary Range:Commensurate with experience
