Job Description

This position is primarily responsible for the supervision and management of all facets of personal health and wellness programs in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors of the North Suburban YMCA and the General Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Boston, under the direction of the Executive Director. This position requires direct supervision over all Personal Training and adult related programs including but not limited to Active Older Adults, Livestrong, Pink and special populations. The duties include developing, scheduling and marketing these programs in accordance to the highest standards. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Senior Healthy Living Director with Group Exercise and Virtual Group exercise if needed. This position reports to the Senior Healthy Living Director.


  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least two years experience instructing in related programs.
  • At least one year of supervision experience.
  • Experience in both virtual and facility based personal training and its functions.
  • Experience in personal training, and health and wellness programming.

  • Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff.
  • At times, be able to lift amounts up to 50 lbs.

Essential Functions

  • Hire, train, and supervise personal trainers and volunteers as programs dictate and budget guidelines allow.
  • Integrate a comprehensive health, wellness and membership approach in regards to Personal Training and Virtual Personal Training for adults and special populations.
  • Develop and implement annual personal training budget and manage agreed upon budget within operating guidelines.
  • Responsible for program enrollment, retention, evaluation, payment records, and reporting of records to the Senior Healthy Living Director.
  • At least ten hours of Direct Service delivery of Personal Training, Group Exercise, or Chronic Disease Programming.
  • Participate in staff meetings, Board of Director meetings, and professional training as appropriate.
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA’s mission and goals.
  • Assist with fundraising for our Annual Campaign.
  • Work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Act as a role model and incorporate character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into the daily operation of the fitness department.
  • Assume other duties deemed necessary by supervisor.
