Job Description

YMCA Camp Copneconic, located in Fenton, Michigan is nestled on private Lake Copneconic. Add 700 acres of beautiful, serene property, a medley of historical and modern facilities, and a long-standing reputation of caring staff, Camp Copneconic is truly the Genuine Article in the camping industry. Since 1915 YMCA Camp Copneconic has served our community as a year-round camp and retreat center focusing on fun, excitement and learning. Camp serves 25,000 guests annually through a wide variety of programs that tailor to groups of many sizes and purposes.

The Executive Director will oversee and direct the overall operations of YMCA Camp Copneconic including innovative program development, financial management and growth, staff development, volunteer and community relationships, facility planning and operation, and marketing and promotion.

YMCA Camp Copneconic has an annual operating budget of $3.7 million and is a branch of the YMCA of Greater Flint. Camp operates year-round outdoor education school programs ($1.2 million), youth & adult retreats including special events & conferences ($520,000), summer overnight camps, and summer day camps ($1.8 million). Camp Copneconic also partners with approximately 15 organizations which vary from medically-based to socially based organizations to provide summer camp experiences to all children.

Camp Copneconic currently employs 18 full-time staff, 40 seasonal year-round staff and an additional 160 seasonal summer camp employees.

The ideal candidate will have a diverse camping background and the ability to handle multiple demands and priorities and achieve organizational goals.

Salary & Benefits

$80,000 - $85,000; onsite housing not provided

9 paid holidays/year and 4 weeks paid time off which will begin accruing on the first day of employment, medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, short term disability, YMCA retirement fund - upon qualifying, 7% employer-paid and 5% employee paid, professional development budget, performance-based incentives, cell phone allowance, relocation stipend


Bachelor's degree in recreation management, business administration or related field, minimum of seven years YMCA professional work experience or equivalent.

Background must include strong skills in human relations, budgeting, sound fiscal management, financial development, program management, volunteer and staff development, marketing and public relations, committee and board relations and staff supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Support the mission, vision and direction of the YMCA of Greater Flint.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the branch operating budget of $3.7 million and meet or exceed budget targets resulting in the annual budgeted surplus.
  • Directs business development in all areas of camp.
  • Coordinate management and maintenance of the facility and equipment.
  • Coordinate the development and management of programs to meet the needs of the community and achieve association operating objectives.
  • Coordinate the development and work of the Camp Board.
  • Ensure outstanding customer service which meets all association standards.
  • Direct the annual branch Partner with Youth fundraising campaign with a volunteer campaign director and meet or exceed branch goals.
  • Build, lead, and supervise the YMCA staff team, including setting and evaluating general expectations for staff performance toward key objectives. The Executive Director is also responsible for interpreting and implementing the policies and guidelines set in the YMCA's Personnel Handbook, mediating/solving staff concerns and disputes, and ensuring that the Y follows sound, effective, and approves HR practices.
  • Organize and direct staff on design and implementation of camper recruitment campaigns.
  • Directs all camp marketing and communication efforts to effectively communicate services to the community.
  • Directs business development in all areas of camp.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation and creativity to create programs that exceed the mission and vision of Camp Copneconic.
  • Ensure compliance with association risk management practices and oversee risk management objectives for camp.

Key Deliverables

  • Fiscal Management -Lead the camp branch to the budgeted surplus by growing operating revenue and managing expenses. Empower and guide the professional staff team on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility. Address financial challenges aggressively to make corrections when needed.
  • Lead, Develop & Inspire Staff- Be open, engaging and innovative. Lead by example with integrity, strong work ethic and character. Engage in staff development and performance resulting in outstanding programming and customer satisfaction.
  • Program & Facility Development- Develop long-range plans for the expansion of programs and facilities to ensure both grow and evolve to meet changing needs. Create a capacity plan to identify and address opportunities and obstacles for growth.
  • Alumni Engagement & Fundraising- Build relationships with alumni new and old enaging with them on a year round basis. Lead branch fundraising efforts by building a culture of philanthropy with alumni, the camp community and the local community.

Required Certifications

YMCA Branch Leader certification required within first two years of employment

CPR/First Aid certification required within first 30 days of employment
