Job Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Camp Program Director is responsible for the implementation and development of but not limited to Overnight and Day Camp and Outdoor Center Programs.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience in camp, outdoor center, environmental education, recreation and/or ropes course programming.
  • Experience in developing and implementing a variety of youth, adult, and/or family programs preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Creativity, excellent organizational skills, willingness to be a team player.


  • Must be able to stand for the duration of the shift.
  • Ability and willingness to supervise and facilitate YMCA Camp ropes course, including all low and high ropes elements.
  • Must be able to climb each element successfully, belay individuals on each element successfully and perform any type of rescue as necessary.
  • Must be able to bend and stoop occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds occasionally.

Essential Functions

1. Assist with the operation of overnight and day camp, consisting of between 300-500 campers weekly during June-August.

2. Responsible for Family Camp and Outdoor Center Programs on a year-round basis.

3. With the Associate Executive Director, ensure that all required standards and guidelines set forth Connecticut Office of Early Childhood and A.C.A. are regularly met.

4. Responsible for recruiting and training seasonal staff for programs.

5. Responsible for development of curriculum development, program promotions, and maintenance/improvements equipment.

6. With guidance from the Executive Director, accountable for budget development and management of program budget.

7. Serve as a member of the management team, assisting with special events, programming and committees as assigned.

8. Serves on YMCA of Greater Hartford Association committees and task forces as assigned.

9. Maintains and further develops contacts and relationships with camp families and area schools.

10. Implements programs that identify safety, quality, and excellent customer services as top priorities.

11. Any other duties assigned.
