Job Description

The Wellness Director position supports the work of Greater Somerset County YMCA, a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility and is responsible the development, organization, implementation promotion and administration of high-quality YMCA programming.

Under the direction of the Branch Executive Directors, the Wellness Director is responsible for the management of Wellness Center operations at our Somerville and Hillsborough, NJ branches to include oversight of all Wellness Floor staff, Personal Trainers, Group Ex staff and related programs. The Wellness Director takes a leading role in building relationships with members and program participants through effective and positive member service and actively supports our member first initiatives and culture. This position requires some evening and weekend coverage.



  • 3-5 years of working experience in fitness or related area and possess knowledge of Exercise Physiology, Strength Training Principles and Technique, Exercise for Older Adults and Customer Service.
  • Supervisory experience is a must.
  • Ability to administer fitness assessments and design fitness and group exercise programs.
  • Must possess superior leadership and interpersonal skills to have the ability to work well with staff and interact with membership. Must have an entrepreneur’s attitude and skills.
  • Must have flexibility in work schedule and expectations to work evenings and weekends.


  • Requires a BS/BA degree in Exercise Science or related field or its equivalent in experience.
  • Nationally recognized Personal Training Certification (AFFA, ACE, ACSM preferred)
  • Nationally recognized Group Exercise Certification
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Current Bloodborne Pathogens certification.
  • GSCY Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire
  • GSCY New Staff Orientation Training within 90 days of hire*

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement innovative wellness programs to assist with member retention and exercise adherence to include member-focused high quality group exercise programs.
  • Assists in the management, development and monitoring of the Wellness department budget.
  • Manages all on/offsite and virtual programming and maintains relationships with community partners in a positive and strategic manner.
  • Hire, train and develop Personal Trainers, Group Ex Instructors and Floor Supervisors.
  • Manages staff schedule for Group Exercise classes and/or Floor Supervisors. Adjusts schedule if needed and communicates changes to all necessary parties.
  • Develop and maintain a work and equipment cleaning schedule for Floor Supervisors.
  • Develop and implement chronic disease programs that serve special needs populations.
  • Engages members on new fitness classes, new equipment, new changes, etc.
  • Complete payroll for all non-exempt staff in a timely fashion.
  • Available to participate in Wellness events and programs outside of normal business hours.
  • Actively participate in the Annual Campaign to raise funds for our financial assistance program.
  • Complete Purchase Orders within budgetary guidelines.
  • Provide monthly feedback on variances to budget.
  • Maintains proper functioning, cleanliness and/or report malfunctioning of all Wellness Center equipment to facilities/supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
