Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Early Learning Center Director at YMCA of the Twin Tiers is responsible for the daily operations of the Olean YMCA Early Learning Center. The Early Learning Center Director holds primary responsibility for the education, health, welfare and safety of the children enrolled in YMCA childcare programs.


Bachelor's degree in early education, human/social service or equivalent. Must meet the qualifications required by NY State. Master's preferred.

YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.

Ability to direct programs through supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development, and fundraising.

CPR and first aide certifications may be required.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepare the annual budget in conjunction with the Director of Operations, and be accountable for the income and expenses.
  2. Operate the Child Care programs in accordance with the regulations put forth by the NY Department of Human Services.
  3. Adhere to all STARs NY regulations to obtain star level certification.
  4. Oversee the development of age-appropriate curriculum with emphasis on a comprehensive developmental approach to learning experiences.
  5. Act as a liaison with other community agencies and early childhood committees representing the YMCA.
  6. Establish goals and unit objectives for the Child Care Program that is consistent with those of the YMCA. Review classroom lesson plans to ensure developmental objectives are met.
  7. Coordinate, plan and execute the program and curricula for the Child Care Center with the teachers assuring that the program provided meets the highest quality standards including Teaching Strategy gold assessments three times per year.
  8. Recruit, hire, train, supervise and appraise work of the Child Care lead teaching and support staff.
  9. Prepare and provide required and proposed training for employees to ensure credentials are maintained and licensing requirements are met.
  10. Assist in the procurement of grants, as needed. Conduct regular staff meetings to ensure center goals are met, compliance and maintenance of overall positive employee culture.
  11. Facilitates communication and provides leadership; models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  12. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  13. Perform supervisory functions for all departmental staff including the development of job descriptions, standards of performance and performance appraisals according to YMCA personnel policies. Assure that staff is fulfilling their training obligations. Designate a staff person who is responsible for compliance in the Directors absence.
  14. Develop and implement a marketing plan for the childcare program, ensuring monthly newsletters, and follow up phone calls to phone inquiries and inviting press to special events.
  15. Interview prospective parents and children for the child care programs. All registrations will be completed and kept on file.
  16. Develop strong parent participation and community involvement in the Child Care Center, working with the supporting employers, advisory committee and parent organizations.
  17. Maintains an appropriate relationship with community groups and organizations as a representative of the Olean Family YMCA.
  18. Monitor city and state day care activities and keep abreast of current trends in this field.
  19. Demonstrate quality standards in Character Development at all times.
  20. Continue professional development through community involvement; reading; and further education.
  21. Take a leadership role in the Annual Campaign and serve as a Team Captain. Recruits, onboards, and develops volunteers for the annual campaign program. Works closely with the Director of Association Advancement and Branch Executive in meeting the established annual campaign goal.
  22. Carries out additional responsibilities and assignments deemed necessary by the Regional Child Care Director and the CEO.
