Camp Description

YMCA Camp Santa Maria is a traditional overnight camp located on more than 1,000 beautiful acres near Bailey, Colorado. We are a mid-sized camp that provides children ages 6-17 with outdoor adventures, resilience-nurturing experiences, support from a welcoming camp community, new skills and countless moments of fun, silliness and smile-inducing joy. This year we will serve 100 campers each session, with a staff of 40.

The Cabin Leader provides leadership, direction, and supervision to program participants in all aspects of camp life. From arts and crafts, to sports and games and everything in between, you will have the chance to develop skills in planning, preparing and facilitating age-appropriate activities in large and small groups. Take the chance to re-create your ideal childhood in this role and provide an atmosphere of respect, acceptance, and caring for each child you meet, while showing each one as much individual attention as possible. You will help build and maintain a cabin community of 10-12 campers and show them the magic of camp.

Ability to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings. Camp life can be physically and emotionally challenging. You will be asked to function at 8200', in a variety of summer mountain weather ranging from snow to highs in the 90's with potential strong thunderstorms. On an average day, you will walk 3-5 miles. You will love it.

Position is seasonal. Camp is in session through Aug 14. Salary starts at $290/week. Room and board are included for all staff.


  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children preferably in a resident camp setting.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor skills, archery, arts and crafts, dance, drama, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • CPR, WFA, AED certifications, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date. Lifeguard certification is a plus.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises a group of 10-12 children in a cabin.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards and expectations including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Maintains constructive and timely communication with supervisors.
