Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, this position will be responsible for the cleanliness of the facility, which will include working with cleaning chemicals and equipment, operating backpack vacuums, upright vacuums, carpet cleaners, rotary floor machines, and climbing ladders. Position will be responsible for hiring, managing, and leading a staff of custodians, responsible for the cleanliness of the entire YMCA property, both inside and outside.


Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Must pass a criminal background check.


  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, tilt head, stretch, push/pull, and/or lift objects, use all muscles, and work in a kneeling or reaching position.
  • Ability to be in a crouching position and regularly twist body at the waist, shoulders, or legs.
  • Ability to lift or stack materials weighing 50 lbs. up to a distance of 200 feet.
  • Ability to occasionally lift items weighing 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work in areas or on equipment that often creates conditions of dust and/or dampness.
  • Ability to work with chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Ability to stand on ladders.
  • Ability to use close/color vision and to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments (i.e. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold, and noisy).
  • Ability to reason, solve problems, and make sound decisions, even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies by administering CPR and First Aid effectively.

Essential Functions

  • Perform all housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning restrooms/showers, floors, windows, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, setting up rooms, arranging furniture, and removing trash.
  • Ordering and stocking of all janitorial supplies and equipment needing replenished.
  • The daily duties also include and are not limited to keeping the building in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Perform heavy cleaning duties on occasion, such as shampooing rugs, washing walls, and removing rubbish.
  • Develops budget supporting the cleanliness and monitors expenditures against budget.
  • Duties also include notifying management of need for repairs and assisting with building, equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Responsible for cleaning snow or debris from sidewalk, keeping parking lot clean, and other ground duties as assigned.
  • Manage a team of part-time custodians to accomplish the cleanliness goals of the YMCA, including hiring, training, developing, scheduling, and directing assigned staff and volunteers. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Communicate regularly with CEO on cleaning issues and reporting on needs for property repairs to CEO.
  • Housekeeping job duties extend to the Bruce Sedrel Day Camp site location owned by the Mahaska County YMCA.
  • Handle safely with protective equipment all pool chemicals delivery, resupply, and extraction.
  • Work alongside the YMCA leadership team, participating in special events, and required all-staff events.
  • Assist the CEO in working with outside agencies such as fire, health, building depts., etc. to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to the facility and grounds.
