Camp Description

The Sherman Lake YMCA is an independent camp and conference center located in southwest Michigan on 365 acres of woodland and the shores of Sherman Lake. The camp offers year-round programs founded in the character principles of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility to summer campers, school groups and retreat guests. The Center is also home to a YMCA membership facility with indoor pool, climbing wall, high ropes course, gymatorium, dance studio, work out facility and other great amenities.

Job Description

Sherman Lake YMCA is seeking a full-time program director to serve in the Integrated Education program. This position will be a member of the team that runs a busy 30-week school program focusing on integrating social-emotional learning through our "Camp to Classroom" curriculum. This unique opportunity will provide the successful candidate with training and experience grounded in the best practices of character development. We focus on building social emotional learning skills in our youth development leaders as well as the youth we serve. The Integrated Education program has received the American Camp Association's Eleanor P. Eells Award for Program Excellence and the program was named a "bright spot" in character education by the YMCA USA.

Qualifications

  • Must role model the principles of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility to campers, staff, and peers at all times.
  • Be a positive and enthusiastic professional representative of the programs of the Sherman Lake YMCA.
  • Bachelor's degree, prior supervisory experience. First Aid, CPR with AED certification, lifeguard, ropes certification and chauffeurs license will be required but can be obtained after hire. Prefer candidates who hold these certifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work with a variety of people, willingness to be a team player.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as program director in the Sherman Lake YMCA Integrated Education program, taking a leadership role, utilizing best practices and delivering high-quality programs.
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team.
  • Build strong and positive relationships with teachers, staff, and students.
  • Supervise and mentor staff and support them as they deliver programs rich in SEL skills.
  • Run school groups on-site providing student, teacher and staff support. Opening and closing, supervision of activity areas and supporting teacher needs while on site with group.
  • Lead staff training sessions to prepare youth development leaders for their roles.
  • Facilitate activities such as high ropes, boating, archery, team building and maintain or obtain necessary certifications.
  • Participate in ongoing program quality improvement.
  • Provide support to summer programs (day, overnight, high school leadership)

Required Certifications

  • First Aid, CPR with AED certification

  • CDL endorsement

Certifications may be obtained after hire.
