Martin Luther King Day of Service Story

"I always feel a sense of accomplishment when helping with any project sponsored by the Y. We had a great group of people enthusiastic on completing a task together."
- Jen Arbogast, Togetherhood service committee member

Name of Project: Martin Luther King Day of Service
YMCA: Kraft Family YMCA, YMCA of the Triangle Area, Raleigh, NC
Parnter: St. Augusta MB Church and YMCA community garden
Date: January 2014

Time outdoors on a warm winter's day

We had 149 volunteers working in morning and afternoon shifts to complete yard work, trash pickup, painting and maintenance of the surrounds. The weather was on our side and there was a lot of hauling and clearing to accomplish.

Volunteers worked beside people they had not known before and accomplished a set of simple but important tasks the church staff couldn't complete on their own. The groups also worked to prepare the community garden beds for the spring planting in a hopeful gesture of spring to come.
