YMCA of the USA Applauds Federal Effort to Expand Access to Quality Early Learning Programs

WASHINGTON (November 15, 2013) – YMCA of the USA thanks Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Representatives George Miller, D-Calif., and Richard Hanna, R-NY, for their leadership on behalf of young children and the introduction the Strong Start for America’s Children Act. This legislation will expand access to quality, affordable pre-kindergarten programs. An investment in our nation’s children is an investment in our nation’s future. The fact that both Congress and the President have raised this issue as a national priority indicates a recognition that early learning is an important building block in securing a strong workforce and a strong economy. The introduction of this legislation is a step forward in ensuring that low- and middle-income children receive the important benefits of quality pre-schooling. At the Y, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.  As an experienced provider of quality early education programs, the Y’s programs across the nation encourage and support children in developing literacy, improving academic engagement and performance, building social skills and providing enrichment opportunities they may not otherwise receive.

We look forward to working with the bill sponsors, the administration, Congress and other early learning advocates to enhance the legislation and build support for this investment which will provide a strong foundation for our nation’s youth.
