YMCA of the USA President and CEO Neil Nicoll to Step Down at End of 2014

CHICAGO (June 24, 2014) - YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), the national resource office for America’s 2,700 Ys, today announces that Neil Nicoll, president and CEO of the organization since 2006, will step down from his position at the end of the year. At the invitation of the Y-USA Board of Directors, Nicoll will continue with the organization in the new role of president emeritus, starting in 2015.

“The Y is one of our nation’s vital institutions. From the disparity in academic achievement among children of different backgrounds, to high rates of chronic disease and obesity, to increasing social isolation, we are tackling some of the most pressing issues facing communities across the country in purposeful, innovative ways,” Nicoll said. “Continuing and elevating this work will require committed leadership over a number of years. I realize that I cannot make this commitment and also have the time I want to spend with family and to pursue other interests that have been postponed over the years. Stepping aside is the right decision for me and the Y Movement.”

The Y-USA Board of Directors has established a committee to lead the search for Nicoll’s successor, with the goal of naming Y-USA’s next president and CEO in the fall.

“Neil is one of the nation’s preeminent nonprofit leaders,” said Christine Marcks, chairman of the Y-USA Board of Directors. “He set forth a vision for transforming the Y into a cause-driven organization capable of reaching more people and doing more good, and he has partnered with Y staff and volunteers at all levels to bring this vision to life. Our board of directors joins the rest of the Y Movement in thanking Neil for everything he’s done. We are intent on finding a successor who shares Neil’s passion for the Y and his dedication to improving the common good while helping individuals reach their full potential.”

Nicoll’s professional career with the Y spans 46 years. He joined Y-USA following 14 years as president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle. He previously was the president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Worcester (Mass.) for 12 years, executive director of the Prince Georges County branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., for six years and executive director the Dorchester branch of the YMCA of Greater Boston for three years. Nicoll got his start in the Y Movement in 1968 as a program director at the Howard County branch of the YMCA of Greater Baltimore.
