Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of Operations – Membership/Health & Wellness and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Health and Wellness Director will lead a team of coordinators and front-line staff to ensure the best-in-class execution of our Health and Wellness departments with emphasis on adult, senior adult, youth and teen fitness programs, wellness programs and initiatives, and community health relationships and partnerships. This position will create and lead an ecosystem of innovative health-focused programs and services on behalf of the YMCA both inside and outside of the YMCA to grow the YMCA’s impact.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.           Adheres and complies with the YMCA of High Point Employee Manual, Policy & Procedures Manual, and Code of Conduct.

2.           Recruits, hires, trains, retains, develops, schedules, and directs part time health and wellness personnel and volunteers. Reviews, evaluates, and coaches staff performance. Develops strategies, sets, communicates, model’s expectations to motivate staff and achieve best in class health and wellness goals.

Qualifications

1.           Four-year college degree in health and/or fitness related field and/or 3 years equivalent experience in related field is preferred.

2.           Demonstrated experience in recruiting, hiring, training and development of volunteers and staff.

3.           Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

4.           Ability to effectively work/interact with diverse populations.

5.           Computer literate.  Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook and database management.

6.           High ethical standards and possess strong personal and professional integrity.

7.           Capable in building community relations and partnerships.

8.           Able to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.

9.           Demonstrated ability to have difficult conversations with staff, members, and volunteers regarding performance and behavior.

10.         Minimum age of 21.

11.         Requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of: CPR, First Aid, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, Inappropriate Touch, and any trainings/certifications required by YMCA insurance provider.

12.         Valid NC driver’s license.

13.         Scheduling flexibility based on meeting demands of job roles:  early morning, late nights and weekend work possible.

14.         Ability to initiate activities, participate in programming and interact with children of all ages.

15.         Strong desire to provide servant leadership.

Essential Functions

1.           Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of all Health and Wellness programs, in collaboration with the Director of Operations – Membership / Health & Wellness.

2.           Facilitates, and oversees the organization, evaluation, management and daily operations of quality health, fitness, and wellness programs as well as revenue generating/personal training programs.

3.           Provides staff development opportunities and job specific coaching to staff while effectively managing the contributions of each staff member to ensure excellence in programming.

4.           Develops and manages Health and Wellness Department budget to meet or exceed budgeted goals and make appropriate adjustments when necessary.

5.           Monitors the utilization care and inventory of the department’s facilities and equipment to ensure effective and safe use.

6.           Provides effective fitness and wellness programs for adults, teens, children, seniors, and special populations that retain and drive growth in membership and program participation.

7.           Ensures program portfolio is well comprehensive in structure and quality standards.

8.           Builds a network of Program volunteers through effective recruitment, training and stewardship.

9.           Builds and maintains relationships with community and corporate partners with specific focus of both on-site and off-site fitness programs, community health and corporate wellness.

10.         Champions and continues the growth of Group Exercise, AOA, and health and fitness programs by being an ambassador in the community.

11.         Builds relationships with hospitals, schools, local businesses to promote and train on program offerings at the YMCA.

12.         Ensures health and wellness staff certifications are current.

13.         Ensures all risk management policies and procedures are followed.

14.         Understands program participants’ needs and develops a program plan that includes scheduling of programming, orientations, well-being improvement activities and events that support and optimize the greatest benefits for all involved.

15.         Develops and implements health and wellness special events and promotions.

16.         Partners with marketing & communications department to ensure effective promotion and visibility of all program areas.

17.         Ensures program and membership growth through implementation of effective programs and activities, as well as through on-going development of relationships between Fitness, Group Exercise, Wellness, Personal Training and Member Service program leaders and departments.

18.         Coordinates efforts with the Senior Member Engagement Director in regard to new members that recently joined and assists with the creation and implementation of strategies to keep existing members engaged.

19.         Actively participates in the Annual Friend of the Y Campaign and Special Events and represent the Y in the community.

20.         Completes special projects as assigned.

21.         Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.

22.         Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

23.         Attends all staff meetings, in-service trainings, and other meetings as required by supervisors.

24.         Conducts behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively on the YMCA.

25.         Performs other duties and tasks as requested by immediate supervisor to facilitate efficient and effective operation of the YMCA.
