Associate Aquatic Director

The Raritan Valley Y is seeking an energectic water lover & full-time team member to develop our learn-to-swim and competitive programs.  
Job Description

This position will work with our aquatic team under the direction of the Senior Program Director of Aquatics to oversee and grow our learn-to-swim and water safety programs and competitive swim team, as well as manage and supervise our lifeguard staff. Our competitive swim team and learn-to-swim programs have more than 200 concurrent youth participants each during the school year, and our summer program includes a staff of over 30 lifeguards managing an outdoor aquatic facility. This position is a perfect opportunity for a candidate looking to make a positive impact on youth development, teach swim skills, oversee a safe aquatic environment, and develop learn-to-swim students into confident competitive swimmers. The Associate Aquatic director will be working closely with both the learn-to-swim and competitive swimming elements of our program.

Qualifications

The Associate Director of Aquatics must be at least 21 years of age and have prior experience instructing children in an aquatic environment. A bachelor's degree or a blend of education, professional experience, and training. At least 4 years of work experience in aquatics activities, along with at least 2 years’ experience in supervising and leading teams. Prior experience in competitive swimming strongly preferred.

The Associate Director of Aquatics must obtain a working knowledge of the YMCA, competitive swim team, instructional swim lessons, water safety, and all volunteers, professional staff, for the effective discharge of his/her responsibilities. The Associate Director of Aquatics must be able to establish and maintain necessary relationships with coaches, lifeguards, swim instructors and other YMCA staff, team parents, YMCA members, children and adolescent participants, and the general public.

Requires flexibility in hours (i.e., youth programs taking places evenings and/or weekends).

Essential Functions

· Assist in the supervision, direction and development of any Swim Team-related programs.

· Responsible for coaching, training, and conditioning of Swim Team members.

· Assist in the hiring, supervision, job development, certification and scheduling of: swim team coaches, lifeguards, swim lesson instructors and other aquatic staff as needed.

· Supervise aquatic safety procedures including daily inspection of the on-site and off-site pool facilities under the YMCA’s management. Includes maintenance of pool water and chemical testing, physical pool and surrounding facilities, restrooms, and public areas. 

· Supervise duties of Raritan Valley YMCA lifeguards. Assist in training and development of lifeguarding staff.

· Assist in the development and implementation of progressive swim lesson program and water safety campaigns. Teach, grow  & supervise, YMCA progressive swim lessons and water safety programs.

· Work in collaboration with the Senior Aquatic Director, Swim Team Parents, and other Y staff.

· Serve as a positive role model for children, parents and other staff members at all times by promoting the YMCA mission and values.

Required Certifications

The individual must have the necessary training and experience to instruct competitive swimming and learn-to-swim programs. Additionally, must have lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certificates, a valid background check on file with USA Swimming, or attain all certificates within 30 days of hire. Lifeguard instructor and/or CPO certification preferred.
