Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lead Accountant at the Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while manages accounting functions, including cash receipts, accounts receivable, and accounts payable; administers approved accounting policies and procedures throughout the YMCA; ensures preparation of complete and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP; and assists in the preparation of the operating budget.

Bellingham, WA, a coastal community of 90,000 overlooking Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and the North Cascades Mountain range. The city lies 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia.


1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent.

2. Possess or working towards an Accounting Designation, such as Certified Management Accountant (preferred)

3. Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.

4. Five years of experience or more in a supervisory accounting role.

5. Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.

6. Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.

7. Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.

8. Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.

9. Excellent problem-solving skills.

10.Must be highly organized and have the ability to work with confidential matters.

Essential Functions

1. Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds.

2. Serves as resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting and accounts payable.

3. Supervises or prepares daily cash flow management, monthly bank reconciliation, and maintenance of recurring journal entries; reviews and prepares non-recurring journal entries.

4. Prepares month end and year end closings.

5. Prepares and analyzes the monthly financial statements in relationship to the budget, prior year, and strategic plan that are required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.

6. Maintains records, and prepare various internal and external reports, including reports for various federal and state agencies.

7. Maintains records and supervises the preparation of reports.

8. Prepares for key functions such as annual independent audit and the IRS 990 tax form. Develops and maintains key relationships, including with banks and insurers.

9. Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required and provides recommendations.

10.Works closely with IT staff to ensure that computer and software systems provide accurate information and adequate internal controls.

11.Provide leadership for annual fund raising campaign and Program committees as assigned.

12.Follows organization’s policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect youth from abuse.

13.Follows mandated reporting requirements.
