Job Description

This position supports the mission-driven work of the Bangor Region YMCA, a leading nonprofit in Maine committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Community Health Advocate works with the CEO and the Chief Programs Operations Officer (CPOO) to increase the Y’s visibility among healthcare professionals and the broader community to promote engagement with and support for the Y’s evidence-based health and wellness programs understanding this will increase the impact of the Y’s mission in the community. Social and emotional wellbeing and educational outreach are primary goals of the Advocate along with oversight of the Y’s Caring Connections program for cancer survivors. The Advocate works closely with Y Health and Wellness staff to oversee this programming for health seekers in the community affected by cancer, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s, arthritis and other chronic diseases. The Advocate is responsible for assisting with grant reporting on Y grants for evidence-based health and wellness programs. The Advocate works with the Grant Manager and health and wellness staff to ensure grant goals are met.


  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience with education, social and emotional outreach programming for health and wellness initiatives.
  • Experience with healthcare systems preferred.
  • Is able to multi-task including managing multiple deadlines and priorities and problem-solve issues as they arise. Be flexible and modify role when needed.
  • Is an effective communicator – both oral and in writing – with strong presentation and interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements a high-quality education, social and emotional wellness and outreach program for YMCA evidence-based health and wellness initiatives. Oversees, trains and inspires any staff and volunteers associated with this program.
  • Oversees the YMCA’s Caring Connections program for cancer survivors including facilitating support groups, providing community navigation services, and educational outreach.
  • Collaborates with marketing staff to coordinate a community outreach and marketing plan to increase awareness of the Y’s evidence-based health and wellness initiatives.
  • Develops and delivers educational and outreach programming to healthcare providers, community leaders and other stakeholders. When needed, represents the Y at community meetings.
  • Develops new partnerships and enhances current relationships with community partners and key stakeholders to build connections to and participation in the Y’s evidence-based health initiatives.
  • Assists the CPOO with oversight of Y evidence-based social and emotional programming thus ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Is responsible for assisting with grant reporting on Y grants for Health and Wellness programs. Works with the Grant Manager to ensure grant goals are met.
  • Works with the Y’s Finance Department to ensure budgeting processes associated with the position are complete, efficient and timely.

Required Certifications

Current CPR, AED, First Aid certification required (this can be obtained once hired within 30 days)
