Job Description

The YMCA of the East Bay, one of the largest YMCA’s in the country, located in the San Francisco Bay Area and headquartered in Oakland, California has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Development Officer to provide leadership and guidance in all aspects of philanthropy.

The CDO serves as a member of the CEO’s senior leadership team and is responsible for providing strategic leadership in philanthropy to support the overall mission and strategic direction of the Association. The CDO leads and oversees the development and implementation of policies, plans, and programs in the areas of individual and family philanthropy including major lifetime gifts for programs and capital, endowed and planned gifts, annual giving, foundation and corporate giving and donor relations.The CDO will coordinate efforts of the branches; work with the Board of Directors and committees, the CEO, branch executives, and volunteer groups to achieve positive relations with the community; maximum income from fundraising activities; and create and manage state-of-the-art information management systems and infrastructure to maximize the donor experience.


  • Bachelor's degree, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum ten (10) years progressively responsible and successful executive leadership experience in all areas of nonprofit fund-raising, development, or advancement management is required
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading a comprehensive philanthropy program including major and planned gifts, annual giving, and foundation corporate and government grants and institutional support is required
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) is desirable but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse and multi-cultural business leaders, community and government officials, volunteers, Board of Directors, senior leadership and team members at all levels of the Association
  • Ability to lead strategically but also perform hands-on work in a “roll up your sleeves” culture
  • Current knowledge and understanding of fund-raising technology and software support and demonstrated ability to select, implement, and effectively manage the technology
  • Proven experience developing effective teams that deliver outstanding results

Essential Functions

  • Participate in strategic planning for the Association. Provide leadership and coordination to all development activities including major and capital gifts, annual campaign, endowment, foundations and corporate giving and special events.
  • Work in partnership with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications to enhance the association’s community image and donor experience through leadership/board development program, image enhancement opportunities, public relations, media and community outreach and education methods.
  • Develop and maintain a strong volunteer base to achieve the strategic objectives and goals of the Association. Assist the CEO in developing and managing an actively engaged fund-raising volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Work in collaboration with the CEO in major donor cultivation to increase major donations and cultivate prospects. Develop and implement strong donor communications and cultivation plans. Manage donor experience to create long lasting relationships between the donor and the YMCA.
  • Represent and articulate YMCA’s mission and programs to its potential constituents, members and supporters. Foster innovation through collaboration and forward thinking.
  • Oversee grant proposal writing as requested by Branches and as identified through research by the development department.
  • Oversee creation and operation of a prospect and donor management system to ensure accuracy, legal, institutional, and ethical compliance with donor intent, and to improve the overall operation and effectiveness of Association fund-raising efforts.
  • Ensure proper stewardship of all gifts through development and enforcement of tight administrative procedures for recording gifts, tracking pledges, and managing stewardship plans.
  • Effectively hire, retain, and manage the development department staff required to achieve strategic goals and objectives. Establish working priorities, prepare and manage associated budgets.
  • Provide counsel, support and coordination to Association wide staff with regard to development.
  • Represent the YMCA of East Bay locally, regionally and nationally, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Expand learning and personal skill development through participation in local and national events and career development training.
  • Participate fully in Association events conducted for staff and volunteers.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the CEO.

Compensation/Total Rewards

  • The YMCA of the East Bay has a highly competitive compensation/total rewards package with generous base salary and benefits including:
  • Pay range of $150,000-$200,000, willing to compensate the right candidate
