Job Description

Under the supervision of the CEO, the Henderson Family YMCA Director of Aquatics is responsible for leading and developing aquatics programs and staff. This leader must run the aquatics department with safety in the forefront while ensuring that participant development occurs in a consistent, fun, and healthy manner. The Director of Aquatics is responsible for managing the functions of the program in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff and Board of Directors.


  • Bachelor's degree in related field and/or 2-3 years of related experience preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills with ability to use Microsoft software such as Excel, Word, and Publisher.
  • Exceptional oral, public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage staff and programs.
  • Positive attitude, high level of initiative and professionalism, and enjoy working in and creating a strong team environment.
  • Completion of the following within 90 days of hire: First Aid/CPR/AED, AFO/CPO, lifeguarding instructor certification and swim instructor certification.
  • Completion of YMCA certifications/training currently in effect and as may be amended from time to time.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social, cultural, and economic segments of the community.
  • Capacity to work a flexible schedule and respond to emergent situations.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and to fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to
    all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.

  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
