The Mahaska Co. Y is hiring an Aquatic Director to administer two pools in our new 88,000 sq.ft. facility, which will open in the fall.

Job Description

The Aquatics Director will be responsible for all facets of the aquatic department.The position will include the development and administration of the department; program development and promotion, implementation and evaluation, staff scheduling and supervision, and financial operation in accordance with Mahaska County YMCA goals, objectives and policies. This position will supervise the Dolphins Swim Team, lifeguards, swim lesson instructors, water aerobics instructors, and co-coordinate with Membership on birthday parties and special aquatic events.


1. Ability to work with (handling) and around pool chemicals (acid, chlorine, etc.) following OSHA, state and federal guidelines.

2. Ability to walk, stand, sit, tilt head, stretch, push/pull and/or lift objects, use all muscles and work in a kneeling or reaching position.

3. Ability to be in a crouching position and regularly twist body at the waist, shoulders or legs.

4. Ability to lift or stack materials weighing 50 lbs. up to a distance of 200 feet.

5. Ability to work in areas or on equipment that often creates conditions of dust and/or dampness.

6. Ability to be in and out of pool water and around pools, including mist.

7. Ability to demonstrate and instruct basic swim technique and pool safety procedures.

8. Ability to stand on ladders.

9. Ability to use close/color vision and to adjust focus.

10. Ability to work in a variety of environments (i.e. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold and noisy).

11. Ability to reason, solve problems and make sound decisions, even when distracted by noise and activity.

12. Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies by administering CPR and First Aid effectively.

Essential Functions

1. Develops, administers and controls the designated budgets, including meeting income targets andexpense control, in consultation with the CEO.

2. Selects, trains and supervise paid and volunteer department staff. (Lifeguards, swim lesson instructors, water aerobic instructors, swim team coaches, etc.)

3. Performs as CPO, (certified pool operator)

4. Interprets YMCA goals, objectives and policies to the community and constituency.

5. Evaluate programs and recommend changes based on compatibility with the YMCA goals. Is responsible for the development of new programs.

6. Oversees Dolphins Swim Team, hires/trains and supervises Dolphins coach(s) and coordinates swim team program with coaches and swim team parent board.

7. Coordinates, with Membership, on birthday parties and pool parties scheduling and supervision.

8. Guides assigned center committees in formulating policies and programs consistent with Strategic Plan and YMCA goals.

9. Prepare reports as required.

10. Shares responsibilities for supervision, public relations, planning and promotions as assigned.

11. Evaluates performance, at least on an annual basis, of department personnel.

12. Supervises and is accountable for care and upkeep of department equipment and facilities.

13. Shares responsibility for providing income through membership fees and special subsidies.

14. Assists in the annual campaign.

15. Schedules department facilities to assure equitable usage of facilities.

16. Provides direct leadership to specific programs as agreed upon with the CEO.

17. Assists with any other projects or activities as may be assigned.

Required Certifications

1. Valid lifeguard certification (or ability to pass and obtain within 6 months of hire)

2. Valid lifeguard trainer certification (or ability to pass and obtain within 6 months of hire)

3. CPR/AED/First aid certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)

4. CPR/AED trainer certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)

5. Valid CPO, Certified Pool Operator, certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
