Camp Description

YMCA Camp Jackson is a 320-acre outdoor adventure overnight camp located in the San Isabel National Forest that facilitates camp programs for youth throughout the summer. Our summer camp staff will help support the work we do at the YMCA; by helping create a positive, nurturing environment for our campers and staff. They will also help each camper reach their fullest potential and deepen their connections as part of their overall camp experience.

Counselors are paid a weekly stipend to include meals and lodging.

Mandatory Training: June 6 – 11, 2021

2021 Camp Dates: June 13, 2021 - August 6, 2021

To be considered for this the position you must be available to attend mandatory training listed above and be present at camp from starting date to ending date (June 6th - August 6th.)

All counselors will serve as part of a two-person team in a cabin responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of youth campers ranging in age from 6 to 17.

Leadership skills, enthusiasm, patience, a sense of humor, and self-control are all essential. You must have the ability to provide fun and innovative programs to youth.

These programs will be a combination of directed programs in outdoor sports, archery, horsemanship, survival skills, and self-directed programs such as group games, campfires, pack-out, and other activities.

YMCA of Pueblo’s camp training, First Aid, CPR & AED certification, and Blood Borne Pathogen training are required.

Counselors may also assist during the summer as maintenance /housekeeping /kitchen /office staff. Prior camp or childcare experience is a requirement for this position.

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to facilitate community living with youth in a cabin or tent.
  • Ability to plan, initiate and lead small and large group activities
  • Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to campers, staff, and program participants.
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth and relate well to all age levels and backgrounds.
  • Prior experience with youth or family programming
  • Six months of satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children, and/or family programming preferred
  • Previous overnight camping experience preferred
  • Certifications: CPR, First Aid & AED
  • YMCA lifeguard certified preferred (not required)
  • One year of college completed preferred

Essential Functions

  • Supervises a group of children.
  • Provide a safe environment for children
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Dedication to job, camp participants, and the YMCA cause.
  • Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Attends staff meetings and training.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication.
  • Will be required to work some stay over weekends as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • In addition to the above responsibilities, the person in this position must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk at least a mile without assistance, deal with conflict in a positive way, have the ability to work in high-stress situations, and be able to work very long hours.
  • Compliance with all COVID-related PPE, cleaning, reporting, and prevention expectations efforts. Further training and detail will be provided upon question and/or hire.
