Job Description

Ranch Equestrian Coordinator will be responsible to provide leadership, daily observations, encouragement and supervision of the campers and staff in their village while collectively supporting the daily operation of camp. They will oversee all aspects of the horseback riding program that includes a herd of up to 35 (camp owned and leased horses)


  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be certified by CHA, ARIA or BHS or other ACA-recognized horsemanship certification.
  • Must have documentable riding and teaching experience.
  • Previous experience working with “camp” or “lesson” horses.
  • Preferred experience with minor training of horses.
  • Preferred experience with barn management skills.
  • Preferred knowledge or experience in vaulting, driving (ground and on wagon) and Centered Riding or willingness to gain experience in these areas.
  • Possess skills including supervision of staff, organizational and knowledge of summer camp activities and working with children.
  • Two years of college or equivalent work experience.
  • Person must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.
  • Current certification in Wilderness First Aid or Standard First Aid and CPR required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must meet all state licensing and accreditation requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Essential Functions

  1. Has a desire to care for, work with and motivate campers and counselors. This includes understanding their needs and placing these needs and the objectives of camp before personal needs.
  2. Evaluate and fine-tune the current riding curriculum to better attain the goals of providing a safe and enjoyable recreational riding experience that allows for individual accomplishment and group camaraderie.
  3. Assist riding instructors in development of lesson plans or various level that stay wining the curriculum parameters for 12 to 15 hours of group lesson instruction over the span of two weeks. Add to that, 4-6 hours of off-horse instruction as well.
  4. Create and manage an evening riding program once each week for campers 10-12 and 12-15 years old that is not lesson-related but all about having fun.
  5. Manage and care for all equipment and facilities related to the riding program.
  6. Keep detailed records of equine health including; deworming schedules, vet visits, medication needs and farrier needs.
  7. Develop and maintain a horse care program within the budget allotted that results in a healthy her able to fulfill the requirements of our program. Manage that program over time to accommodate for individual horse needs. This includes proving first aid, administering medications, deworming schedules, monitoring shoeing conditions running feeding times and exemplifying safe horsemanship practices to campers and other staff.
  8. Teach staff, correct methods in dealing with horses so that they may be able to facilitate campers to correctly care for the horses in a way that allows for learning and discovery and minimizes any risk of injury.
  9. Supervise riding staff to ensure that the curriculum is being followed, safety is never compromised and appropriate lesson sequences are being used in all instruction.
  10. Maintain required paperwork throughout the summer on each horse’s health history, accidents and falls and individual rider development.
  11. Assist the Ranch Village Coordinators with the preparation of a variety of village activities.
  12. Prepare and present Ranch Camp Neckerchief tests that are fair and accurate.
  13. Maintain all state and American Camping Association standards.
  14. Supervise campers and staff while doing Ranch chores. This includes organizing the work that has to be done, monitoring the process and working alongside the camper and staff at all times.
  15. Supervise staff and their supervision of campers throughout the daily schedule of the summer.
  16. Attend required training, meetings and overnights.
  17. Create a climate in the village that will foster the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
  18. Support and supervise village staff including: Ranahans, Ranch Counselors and Riding Instructors in respective village.
  19. Assist the Ranch Village Coordinators
    1. Assist with the supervision of staff during riding periods.
    2. Work together with the Ranch Coordinator and the Ranch Equestrian Coordinator to create an environment in the village the promotes the growth of relationship, a positive community atmosphere and accounts for the emotional and physical safety of each person within the group.
  20. Report immediately to Program Directors any evidence of child abuse, including physical, mental and emotional neglect.
  21. Oversee behavior management of campers in village.
  22. Maintain open communication with parents.
  23. Provide a safe environment and program for all participants.

  25. Is familiar with and carries out emergency procedures, building rules and regulations.
  26. Arrive on time for scheduled shifts, wearing appropriate uniform and name tag and prepared for all assignments.
  27. Keep accurate, detailed records of incident reports and other necessary documentation.
  28. Other duties as assigned.
