CAMP BROCHURE The Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan offers so many choices all summer long, and the common thread is that every program will bring incredible growth, skills, friendship, and fun. Set on a 200 acre campus along the shores of Branch Lake in the beautiful Maine wilderness, our Sleep Away Camp, Adventure Seekers, and Leaders School give boys, girls, and teens of all ages and interests a sense of adventure, belonging, and purpose. These programs allow a child to progress and grow each year in our specially designed age-appropriate adventures. Our goal is to partner with parents throughout their child's life.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Camp Director and the Waterfront Director the Boating Director will assist in organizing the total camp program by following the guidelines and policies of the Bangor YMCA. To directly supervise, in an enthusiastic manner, the cabin group, encourage campers to participate in activities and guide the camper throughout their stay at camp. The Boating Director must be able to meet the physical demands of a resident camp counselor and program director.


The incumbent must have the necessary training and experience to effectively carry out assigned waterfront responsibilities. He/she must possess a current and nationally recognized Lifeguarding, CPR/First Aid certification and general boating knowledge. The incumbent must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, lay leaders, volunteers, YMCA members and general public. He/she must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities to staff and volunteers in order to accomplish the necessary duties.

Essential Functions


  • Provide a safe environment and promote cooperation within the cabin.
  • Be a positive role model to campers by setting examples.
  • Maintain discipline within your cabin, in accordance with all Camp Jordan and Bangor Y policies.
  • Promote proper camper hygiene.
  • Actively know where your campers are at all times.
  • Assist your campers with activity sign-up.
  • Take part in all cabin activities, i.e. meals, chapel, cabin clean-up, etc.


  • Supervise all waterfront programs: swimming lessons, general swims, special events.
  • Supervise all boating programs.
  • Ensure that all aquatic activities are carried out in a safe manner consistent with State, Local, ACA and Camp Jordan regulations.
  • Administer swim tests and evaluate all incoming campers.
  • Evaluate swimming instructors and lessons.
  • Train all lifeguards, and swimming staff in waterfront procedures.
  • Be prepared to implement the missing person procedure at anytime.
  • Use the buddy board and buddy system at all times.
  • Keep the boat house clean, and maintain an inventory of all waterfront equipment.
  • Ensure that the Waterfront Director or Boating Director is at waterfront supervising whenever programming is taking place.
  • Attend all trainings as required.
  • Follow the Bangor YMCA mission and YMCA philosophy.
  • Exemplify the YMCA philosophy in teaching to reflect a positive image, promoting the healthy growth and development of all participants.
