Camp Description

Fairview Lake YMCA, an ACA accredited camp, sits on mile-long Fairview Lake in Stillwater, New Jersey. Out 600 acres adjoin the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area, providing access to the Appalachian Trail, Delaware River, hiking and breathtaking views. Established in 1915, Fairview Lake YMCA Camps has been providing Sleep Away summer camping for grades 2-11, Environmental Education for schools, Family Programs, and Weekend Retreats for individuals and groups. We develop programs for children, adults and families to realize their potential by focusing on specific skill sets, building confidence and creating a sense of belonging.

As a growing, mission-focused, and future-oriented association of YMCAs, the Metro YMCA of the Oranges has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, mission-driven, candidate to join our team at our Fairview Lake location.

The Outdoor Center Director will create, develop, and direct a strategic approach to maximize innovative outcome-based programs for our service area. This includes both the recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Provide overall direction of the Conference and Environmental Education staff team to ensure the programs are growing and successful in enhancing value and impactful experiences at Camp and events. The Director will be accountable for facilities, bookings, programs and the effective use of staff as needed, prepare program areas, train staff and instruct participants in all classes. It is essential to ensure the safety of participants, proper use of equipment and facilities. Ensure an enjoyable experience to participants. The Outdoor Center Director will assume any program-related responsibilities when necessary.


  • Bachelors Degree in Education, Recreation or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in leadership role of similar scope, with the ability to professionally develop staff.

  • Strong Customer Service, Time Management and Organizational skills.

  • Strong fiscal management and budgeting skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage all situations with poise applying effective judgment and sound decision making.

  • Strong commitment to following all sanitation procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build team spirit, communicate with all levels of staff.

  • Ability to problem solve and take initiative that adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of the YMCA.

  • Strong computer skills, software proficiency with Microsoft applications.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure department’s financial benchmarks, effectively managing day-to-day operations, driving revenue, and monitoring departmental expenses.

  • Enable proactive, clear, effective and timely internal communications in order to ensure a positive and consistent camp experience.

  • Identify, collect and interpret data so it enables informed decision-making and ensures the achievement of key performance indicators.

  • Create strategies to promote recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Direct team to achieve annual goals. Identifies and works with leadership to grow opportunities to enhance group and program experience

  • Develop staff profiles and skill requirements, including customer service and computer skills. Identifies gaps and helps coordinate training as needed. Direct overall ongoing staff assessment to ensure that staff are operationally effective.

  • Work with leadership team to coordinate program registration, and work with program directors to maximize sales within program areas.

  • Develop, plan and implement procedures and methods to achieve department goals.

  • Provides guidance to camp Marketing to ensure member recruitment, and implement marketing efforts successfully, including community events, direct mail, newspaper ads, and other marketing channels.

  • Develop and nurture new and existing partnerships and collaborations throughout the community.

  • Recruit, hire, professionally develop and supervise the program staff to ensure effective and efficient performance.

  • Expand, grow, continually evaluate and upgrade existing programs and brainstorm with staff to develop new educational programs in new and existing markets.

  • Organize, develop and execute promotion that successfully markets the offerings of programs with leadership and Marketing.

  • Follow up on all program lead inquiries.

  • Act as a Primary Host for all groups.

  • Attend Program Committee and Board of Managers meetings as required.

  • Leadership role in the Annual Support Campaign, Capital Fundraising and other related activities.

  • Perform other job-related duties as requested and necessary.
