Job Description


This bold, multifaceted community integrated health initiative was opened in December of 2019 after 10 years of planning. The Y has completely redeveloped this entire city block, including a soon-to-be-constructed public elementary school connected to the Y. This Y is triggering a resurgence of other development in this historic African-American neighborhood. The $30 million project includes multiple health and education partners joining with the YMCA in working to eliminate the historic health and education disparities in West Louisville. In collaboration with these tenant partners, our goal is to engage the community in multiple needed programs and services.


The Executive Director will lead all aspects of this new YMCA. Building and maintaining strong relationships with community leaders and other health advocates will be a critical part of this role. Significantly improving the community’s health and positioning the YMCA to be seen as a key player in solving community health issues are top goals. West Louisville has a population of about 92,000 residents (68% African-American, 28% Caucasian, median income $25,000) plus a large number of office and manufacturing work sites in the area.


We seek an experienced leader with a record of producing outstanding results and excellence in member services and programs, with a particular emphasis on the unique needs of an urban community with vulnerable populations. We seek proven skills in developing personal relationships, community partnerships, fundraising, board development, major facility management, financial management, membership and program development, marketing, and working with diverse populations. Candidates must embrace a fast-paced, high-volume environment and be able to develop and lead a high-performing team of staff and volunteers. The complexity of this position necessitates a person with a proven track record of sophisticated leadership that includes the ability to articulate the Y’s mission and charitable purpose, cultivate relationships and seek collaborative opportunities within the community. An understanding of the concepts of (health) equity, social determinants of health, community-integrated health and collaboration is critical.



1. Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business or equivalent preferred

2. Six or more years of community services/recreation management experience preferred

3. Fundraising experience and a thorough understanding of running an Annual Campaign

4. Previous budget responsibility of at least $500,000

5. Experience in development of volunteers; ability to recruit top community leaders

6. Experience and knowledge in facility management

7. Prefer knowledge of and experience with serving historically disinvested communities of color

8. Successful track record of supervising a full-time staff team

9. A passion for and experience working with urban communities and vulnerable populations

Essential Functions


1. Serve as a role model and advocate of the YMCA Mission, Promise, Values, Voice, and Strategic Vision.

2. Lead the continued development of the new Y board and the annual fund raising campaign.

3. Build and utilize a continuous community feedback loop to develop and continually innovate YMCA programs and services including membership/healthy living programs, swimming programs, summer day camp, youth sports, and a teen tech center.

4. Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develop/maintain positive collaborative relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.

5. Work with existing neighborhood organizations to strengthen surrounding neighborhoods.

6. Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of quality staff.

7. Develop, manage, and monitor the branch operating budget and meet or exceed budget targets.

8. Ensure the safety, attractive appearance, and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.

9. Direct branch marketing and communication efforts to exceed enrollment and impact goals.

10. Facilitate the partner-tenant integrated services committee to maintain highly integrated services to the community in this new facility.

Membership development goal - 4,000 members from 1,500 households

Staff development & leadership - 5 full-time and 50+ part-time

Facility management - 77,000 square feet, including 19,000 square feet of partner tenants

As a result of this executive’s work, social determinants of health are addressed and health outcomes for residents of West Louisville will improve. The rich history of these West Louisville neighborhoods is honored. Community residents, employers, and the local work force are attracted to belong and contribute to the YMCA to support its work in the community. A seamless culture of teamwork is created among the organizations sharing the new facility such that individuals in the community are attracted to and can easily access the services they need. Partnerships with other community organizations are attracted to become a part of the project and become new partner-tenants in the new facility.
