Job Description

PRESCHOOL TEACHER: Under the direction of the Child Development Director, the Preschool Teacheris responsible for supervision and care of children providing direction for the classroom and implements age-appropriate program curriculum.Teachers are expected to follow a daily routine, implement of curriculum, complete of observation reports, and supervise children.This position is also responsible for recordkeeping, inventory of supplies in the classroom, any safety issues, and communications with parents.Teachers provide a quality experience to children and parents that is in accordance with the association’s policies and procedures that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

FLOATER TEACHER: Under the direction of the Child Development Director, the Floater Teacher will assist all teachers with breaks and take over classrooms on occasion. Floater teachers will occasionally take over the classroom duties include following a daily routine, implementation of curriculum, completion of observation reports, and child supervision. Assist with the front desk when needed, answer and place phone calls, address parent’s questions and needs. This position is responsible for supervision and care of children in any of the programs in the center (infant room, toddler room, and preschool). You will aid the team of teachers in general supervision and management of a class you are assigned to. This position is also responsible for helping with recordkeeping, inventory of supplies in the classroom and any safety issues. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that is in accordance with the association’s policies and procedures that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Parent satisfaction is high. Classrooms/Program areas and equipment is safe, clean and well maintained. Activities are well organized and meet participants’ needs and Y standards. Participants are treated with care, honesty, and respect by all staff.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 12 ECE units from an accredited college and a commitment to continue education to obtain a BA in ECE or a related field (AA minimum for associate teachers)

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.

  • Up-to-date TB test every 2 years. If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required.

  • Must have a current Live scan active on file.

  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.

  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.

  • Completed of infant and toddler courses from an accredited college with a “C” grade or better is a plus

  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

  • If hired, employee must present a negative COVID-19 test prior to first day of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is not considered light duty. Employee must be able to lift 60 pounds; be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and be in good physical health.

  • Employee must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to safely withstand exposure to the elements which include sun, wind, and any weather while on duty.

  • Must be able to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.

  • Ability to see at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds.

  • Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular basis.

Essential Functions

Administration / Management Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all children’s classroom records in an up-to-date accurate and appropriate manner.

  • Conduct classroom programs in compliance with department policies and procedures following all state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Advise supervisor of all incidents, problems and occurrences with staff, children, parents, and program.

  • Complete assignments in a timely, organized, neat and accurate manner.

  • Attend and participate in regular in-service trainings for staff.

  • Assist with the front desk when needed, answering phones, greeting parents and addressing center needs.

Facility Management:

  • Advise Child Development Director of necessary equipment repair and general maintenance needs

  • Follow daily opening and / or closing procedures.

  • Maintain work area in an organized and appropriate manner.

  • Ensure that classroom and program activity areas are kept in an organized and tidy manner.

Program Planning, Development and Evaluation:

  • Follow the goal-oriented and theme programs.

  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for all program participants.

  • Employ consistent methods of child behavior management and work with all staff in maintaining consistent and fair discipline techniques.

  • Give attention to and solve day-to-day “crises” that occur in the program.

  • Address parent and program participant concerns in a timely and professional manner.

  • Supervise and assist children with meal and snack time.

  • Supervise and assist children with toileting and personal care needs.

  • Supervise nap/quiet time for children.

  • Keep the Child Development Director informed of all parent concerns and issues, following YMCA rules and guidelines.

  • Follow YMCA work rules and procedures to complete all assigned tasks and duties in an efficient, timely and positive manner.

  • Model non-sexist and non-racist behavior.

  • Be cooperative, accessible and an active member of the YMCA staff.

  • Be punctual and responsible to assigned schedule and not abuse staff privileges.

  • Follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines and precautions.

SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT:

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications must be current.

  • Staff must adhere to safety protocols related to COVID-19 in a child care setting. All employees and participants have daily health checks, wear face masks, and practice social distancing
  • In-house Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse and Safety Trainings must be complete within the first 30 days of employment.

  • Absolutely no contact with students or program participants outside of the YMCA either in person, via social media, text, online, etc. Babysitting or caring for children who are enrolled or were enrolled in the program is prohibited. Any outside contact with current or former enrollees of the program will result in immediate termination.

  • Employees should be aware that all information published on a blog or public website is publicly accessible. You are advised to be mindful that the information you post on the internet will likely be seen by members of the Santa Monica Family YMCA community and could reflect poorly on your character. Therefore, information posted on public websites that reflects poor character values is putting your job at risk.

  • Employees may not wear headphones or earbuds while on duty.

  • Employees may only use their cell phone when off duty or for emergencies.

  • Employees may not take pictures or post pictures of students or program participants on any form of social media without the consent of the parent/guardian and the YMCA Administration.
