Job Description

The Chief Wellness Operating Officer (CWOO) is a key executive position at the Bangor Region YMCA, a leading nonprofit in Main committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serving in the CEO's senior leadership team, the CWOO ensures the Y's daily operations run smoothly while ensuring the Y's human resources needs are met. The CWOO develops the operating strategies to attain the organizations' strategic goals and ensures each department understands its role in helping to achieve the Y's mission. The CWOO will oversee the Y's health and wellness programming understanding its impact on the lives of all who live in the Greater Bangor Region. The CWOO works closely with the CEO to position the Y as a convener and collaborator to address critical social issues in the community


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • YMCA experience preferred
  • health and wellness programming experience
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility management and financial practices
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Essential Functions

  • Works with Y managers, particularly in Health and Wellness and Aquatics, to ensure each department stays on track to meet its goals
  • Focuses on the vision of the Y as it relates to Health, prevention, Chronic Disease, Evidence-Based Programs, Health Related Grants, Partnerships, an meeting the ever-changing needs of our community
  • Partners with the CFO to ensure the membership department operates efficiently with priority given to customer service and financial sustainability
  • Strengthens relationships with the Y's current corporate wellness partners and expands the corporate wellness program by reaching out to more area businesses.
  • Ensures department managers are carrying out programming funded by grants and works with managers gathering the data information needed to report out on their grants
  • Addresses the root cause of organizational systemic issues rather than symptoms and presents solutions to these issues that are in keeping with the Bangor Y's culture and values
  • Provides leadership and direction to Y staff through coaching and mentorship by providing overall direction to staff and volunteers
  • Partners with the CEO and community to ensure the Y is identifying and effectively meeting community needs
  • Creates organizational policies and structures that remove barriers and foster equity, diversity, and inclusion for all
  • Works with the CFO to monitor financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met, budgets are followed, and expenses controlled.
  • Ensures operational growth of the Bangor Y through suggestions for program expansion, collaborations and community partnerships
  • Identifies potential areas for department cooperative programming to accomplish Y goals and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs
  • Has upper-level management and program experience

Required Certifications

College graduate. Current CPR, AED, First Aid certification required (although this can obtained once hired within 30 days). Trainings to be completed before start of duties include Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogens, Workplace Violence, Sexual Harassment, Active Shooter, Elder Abuse Prevention
