Job Description

The Chief Youth Development Operating Officer is a key executive position at the Bangor Region YMCA, a leading nonprofit in Maine committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serving on the CEO’s senior leadership team, this position works closely with the Chief Wellness Operating Officer to ensure the Y’s daily operations run smoothly, the Y’s human resources needs are met, there are efficient operating strategies to help attain the organization’s strategic goals and that each department understands its role in helping to achieve the Y’s mission. This position will oversee the Y’s youth development programs (early childhood, school age, teenage) understanding their impact on the lives of all who live in the Greater Bangor Region. This position works closely with the CEO to position the Y as a convener and collaborator to address critical social issues in the community.


  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in youth development programs, curriculum and evaluation.
  • YMCA experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility management and financial practices.
  • Understands the nature and purpose of the YMCA, its culture and values.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Has a track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.

Essential Functions

  1. Works with Y managers, particularly in Early Childhood, Schoolage, and Teenage program managers, to ensure each department stays on track to meet its goals.
  2. Partners with the CFO and the Chief Wellness Operating Officer to ensure the membership department operates efficiently with priority given to customer service and financial sustainability.
  3. Strengthens relationships with the Y’s current youth development partners and expands and ensures the high quality of youth development programs by reaching out to more area partners.
  4. Ensures department managers are carrying out programming funded by grants and works with managers gathering the data and information needed to report out on their grants.
  5. Addresses the root cause oforganizational systemic issues rather than symptoms and presents solutions to these issues that are in keeping with the Bangor Y’s culture and values.
  6. Provides leadership and direction to Y staff through coaching and mentorship and by providing overall direction to staff and volunteers.
  7. Partners with the CEO and community to ensure the Y is identifying and effectively meeting community needs.
  8. Creates organizational policies and structures that remove barriers and foster equity, diversity and inclusion for all.
  9. Works with the CFO to monitor financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met, budgets are followed, and expenses controlled.
  10. Ensures the operational growth of the Bangor Y through suggestions for program expansion, collaborations and community partnerships.
  11. Identifies potential areas for department cooperative programming to accomplish Y goals and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs.

Required Certifications

College graduate. Current CPR, AED, First Aid certification required (although this can be obtained once hired within 30 days). Trainings to be completed before start of duties include Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogens, Workplace Violence, Sexual Harassment, Active Shooter, Elder Abuse Prevention.
