Job Summary

The Edwardsville YMCA seeks a visionary leader who will build upon a highly successful culture of excellence within a thriving community. The YMCA is recognized as a pillar of community life in Edwardsville and is the leading provider of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility programs.

The CEO will be uniquely positioned to champion the YMCA mission, enhance collaboration, and develop new partnerships to meet the needs of a growing and family-oriented population. Continuing strong relationships and expanding partnerships is a key focus for the future work of the YMCA.

Qualified candidates must have a proven track record that demonstrates solid business acumen, sound judgment, an entrepreneurial spirit, and exceptional leadership skills. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to build a culture that supports and retains outstanding staff and an active, diverse volunteer board of directors and its respective committees. The CEO will be visible, approachable, and active in the community, developing meaningful partnerships and collaborations with other non-profit organizations, public sector entities and businesses.

The CEO will successfully implement and promote the YMCA’s services and activities to the community; raise funds through annual and capital campaigns; and work with a YMCA board that is engaged and committed to the continued success of the mission of the Edwardsville YMCA.

Service Area & Demographics: Branch/Program Center Locations: Three (3) locations serving over 6,800 units of membership with 18,000 members. including an early child development center providing daycare and preschool programming, website: http://www.edwardsvilleymca.com/

The Edwardsville YMCA 3 Facilities Consist of:

  • Niebur Center 45,000 sq. ft. location with 2 indoor pools, gymnasium and fitness areas
  • Meyer Center 116,500 sq ft. center with tennis court, gymnasium, fitness center, skate center, gymnastics center, climbing wall and outdoor pool
  • Allison Cassens Early Childhood Development Center 10,000 sq. ft.
  • Staff: The YMCA employs approximately 20 FT management/administrative staff, 5 PT management staff, 8 FT hourly staff and (pre-pandemic) 350+ PT staff with an additional 100+ employees in summer positions.

Financial Position: The 2021 operating budget is $6M. All facilities are in good condition.

Financial Assistance: The 2020 Annual Support Campaign is $160,000. The YMCA has a very successful financial assistance program and we are committed to ensuring that our YMCA is truly a place for everyone in our community. In 2020 over $270,000 was awarded in financial assistance and membership and program scholarships. Debt $3,000,000; PPP loan $773,000 (expecting 100% forgiveness); No endowment.

Essential Functions

Board Expectations and Key Deliverables: The Y board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

  • Advocate the YMCA Vision within the Edwardsville YMCA Service Area: Be an active advocate for the mission, goals, and values of the Edwardsville YMCA. Serve as a spokesperson with a contagious effect on others. Create strategic and successful relationships with influential leaders, potential donors, members and organizations in our communities, with an eye toward leveraging those relationships that will be mutually beneficial to those involved.
  • Financial Development and Building a Culture of Philanthropy: Lead the board, foundation, and leadership staff through fundraising programs and campaigns, and position the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Edwardsville YMCA with community leaders and donors.
  • Optimize Operational Performance: Continue to grow membership and programs in service to the community. Provide leadership to ensure the financial stability of the organization, while delivering affordable programs for all, and continuing facility improvements. Work with the board and foundation to develop long-term and annual tactical plans for achieving key goals and objectives.
  • Provide Strategic Leadership: Lead the Edwardsville YMCA by partnering with staff, the board, our members and the community in efforts that rally all our stakeholders to enact a strategic plan that aligns with the mission and vision of the Edwardsville YMCA.
  • Lead an Effective Staff Team/Build a Positive and Productive Culture: Be a leader who motivates, engages, and develops staff in a positive and productive manner, and who creates and sets an expectation for excellence. Demonstrate an engaging, open, positive and inclusive leadership style, and display integrity, honesty, courage, and open-mindedness to unconventional and new ways of improving services and expanding impact.
  • Nurture a Mission-Driven Culture: Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, integrity, and character within the Edwardsville YMCA that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
