Job Description

The Executive Director of Community Health is responsible for leading a dynamic, outcome-driven portfolio of programs and services designed to address health disparities, reduce hunger, improve nutrition and decrease the prevalence of chronic disease in western North Carolina. Under the direction of the COO, the Executive Director of Community Health leads the daily operations of Community Health services throughout the region. This includes but is not limited to providing support and guidance to participants and staff, coordinating services with medical/community partners, employers and ensuring that each program/service achieves quality performance outcomes.

This position works with health seekers, employers, community leaders, YMCA leadership and representatives from the public health, clinical and managed care communities. The incumbent must have a passion for service and improving the health of our community. They must also possess the ability to work with data, lead others, be detail orientated and have exceptional organizational and communication skills. This position must ensure program responsibilities are performed in accordance with the commitments made to funders, partner organizations and the policies, goals, values, and mission established by the YMCA of WNC.


1. Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. 5 years professional experience in program leadership, product innovation and fiscal management.

3. YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader certification preferred or obtained within one year from date of hire.

4. Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.

5. Requires strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize workloads in order to meet deadlines as well as being detail-orientated and conscientious.

6. Must have good interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make presentations.

Essential Functions

1. Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.

2. Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of staff.

3. Develops, manages, and monitors the center operating budget to meet or exceed budget targets.

4. Function as an expert in Evidence-Based Health Intervention (EBHI) programs and serve as a trusted advisor and partner to center leaders.

5. Work with the COO to serve as staff liaison to the Board of Director’s Community Health Committee.

6. Develop and implement measures to ensure the following: integrated marketing approaches, smooth enrollment processes and the regular reporting of core outcomes are achieved.

7. Conduct regular market research and prepare statistical, analytical and narrative reports regarding strategies to achieve objectives established by our operating priorities.

8. Build capacity of and deliver EBHI programs in a manner that complies with, and or exceeds, published standards of the CDC, YUSA and other applicable organizations.

9. Support the continued development and implementation of quality control measures to ensure compliance with federal and state standards for both CACFP and SFSP, along with program and/or grant-specific outcomes.

10. Support the implementation of regular audits to identify operational efficiencies, program growth opportunities, and ensure that quality benchmarks are met in all aspects of program delivery.

11. Identify programmatic issues and provide solutions to department and center leadership to increase participant satisfaction and program outcomes as substantiated by data, surveys, and program audits.

12. In collaboration with center leaders, identify opportunities for innovation, growth and advancement that addresses community needs.

13. Provide staff training and coaching on program development, fiscal stewardship, innovation, and best practices related to the management, growth, and sustainability of services.

14. Provide positive influence & direction for program leaders that focuses them on meeting and exceeding outcomes verified through quality control audits, surveys, and on-site visits.

15. Coordinate cross-departmental workflow between all program groups and centers to ensure a streamlined flow of information relating to services provided, outcomes, volunteer opportunities, etc.

16. Ensure smooth day-to-day business operations and clear communications between departments, centers and the YMCA Corporate Office.

17. Collect outcome data to ensure program and service fidelity is maintained while also adhering to grant terms and compliance with HIPAA regulations.

18. Analyze, compile and present program recommendations based on participant usage, community data, and availability of funds.

19. Develop, manage and grow community relationships to maximize collaborative efforts and access to resources resulting in sponsorships and program growth.

20. Ensure strong financial sustainability through annual campaign involvement, grant writing, federal reimbursements and efficient operations.

21. Support the annual campaign by connecting community partners to our cause, securing gifts and sponsorships in support of program development and community positioning.

22. Take a leadership role supporting the Financial Development Department by maintaining and managing a substantial Top 20 portfolio of prospects.

23. Other duties as assigned.
