Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Aquatic Director is responsible for the administration and direction of the Aquatics program and supervision of the Aquatics staff. The Aquatic Director’s key function is to promote the charitable mission of the Westport Weston Family YMCA by building strong lasting relationships with members and their families, as well as employees. The Aquatic Director will assure that programs and facilities exceed the goals and objectives of the Westport Weston Family YMCA. The Aquatic Director must possess good organizational, communication and supervisory skills.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or minimum of 3 years’ experience in aquatics programs, as well as experience in managing aquatic facilities, equipment, budget, and staff.
  • Knowledge in aquatic programming, including, but not limited to, life guarding, swim lessons, aquatic fitness, and aquatic therapy.
  • Y-USA Team Leader Certification and all required Y-USA Aquatic trainings are preferred

Essential Functions


1.Assign duties, create schedules for staff, and maintain accurate records including attendance, certifications, skill levels, personnel, and pay records.
2.Communicate important program information to program participants, staff, and volunteers.
3.Seek out willing volunteers for the Family YMCA and assign tasks as needed.
4.Supervise all swim instructors, life guards, aquatic fitness, and aquatic therapy staff.
5.Coordinate all pool rentals by outside groups.
6.Meet with aquatic staff as needed and report to CEO.
7.Continually evaluate and develop the Aquatic department’s program offering.
8.Represent the Family YMCA at necessary meetings, clinics, trainings, and workshops, as assigned by the CEO.
9.Provide direction and education for swim instructors to ensure that they provide a high quality and current program.
10.Coordinate with Camp Director the Y’s Hafaday Camp program each summer and during school breaks.
11.Organize and implement Point to Point Compo Beach Swim event to benefit the Annual Campaign.

Health and Safety

1.Maintain a high safety standard for participants, staff, and volunteers of the Aquatic department programs.

2.Ensure that there is the appropriate ratio of lifeguards to swimmers on the pool deck at all times.
3.Ensure all department staff maintain appropriate certifications.
4.Ensure that all staff are trained and prepared to handle emergency situations.
5.Hold monthly in-service trainings for life guard staff to ensure that staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations.
