Job Description

The Vice President of Advancement oversees and manages the organization’s fundraising strategy, development and execution. S/He works closely with the President/CEO, the Development team and volunteers to raise the funds necessary to fulfill the mission of The Summit Area YMCA. This position is responsible for leading the growth, development, and successful execution of a comprehensive major gift program, building relationships and a pipeline of annual donors with the ultimate goal of cultivating major donors. The position is directly responsible for the management of the Annual Campaign, Capital Campaign, special events, foundation proposals, major gifts, and planned gifts. The position will serve as a resource to the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree or CFRE preferred.
  • A minimum of 6 years of development/fundraising experience, with a focus on soliciting major gifts, annual campaign, capital and endowment programs and special events.
  • Proven track record identifying and cultivating donors; personal and group solicitations for individuals, corporations and foundations; and first-hand experience building relationships and stewarding donors.
  • Prior experience working with similar membership base preferred.
  • Present the image of a poised, knowledgeable and caring individual, maintaining a respectful, compassionate and understanding presence with volunteers, donors, board members, marketing contacts and the general public.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex and sensitive material, and to present appropriate, well-informed messages to donors
  • Demonstrated ability to write a range of correspondence from formal business letters to donor-focused thank you notes. Also create persuasive materials that explain the Y’s community impact for potential donors.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Keen attention to detail with ability to simultaneously track multiple projects
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make sound decisions in response to rapidly-changing often complicated situations.
  • Technical ability to utilize and run reports on fundraising support software (Raiser’s Edge preferred).
  • Foundation grant writing experience preferred.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
  • Availability on evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees all Development initiatives and strategies of the Association, including the Annual Campaign, Capital Campaign, special events, foundation proposals, major gifts, and planned gifts.
  • In collaboration with the President & CEO, develops and executes annual Development Department goals and develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the Association.
  • Assures the implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization.
  • Assures development and maintenance of appropriate systems to fund development including but not limited to volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition.
  • Maintains accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
  • Serves as primary staff to the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • In collaboration with the President/CEO and Advancement Committee, oversees a $7M Capital Campaign.
  • Responsible for staying abreast of overall knowledge of the organization, including The SAY’s history, current events & programs in order to understand and explain SAY’s cause for support.
  • Engage the time and talents of all stakeholders (staff, volunteers, senior leadership, etc.) towards the maximization of the SAY’s growth opportunities.
  • Establishes and monitors the Development Department’s annual budget.
  • Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the gift cycle: initiates contacts with prospective major gift donors and develops appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
  • Increase donor retention metrics via targeted stewardship with goal to feed donors through the giving pipeline.
  • Accompanies SAY President/CEO, Executive Directors, and volunteers on major gift requests.
  • Supervises the Development Team to assure department strategies, timelines, fundraising events, and other logistical tasks are met to ensure achievement of revenue goals in support of the Y’s priorities.
  • Responsible for oversight of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge fundraising database to ensure proper tracking of gifts, acknowledgements, events and moves management system for major gift prospects.
  • Prepares and coordinates foundation grant proposals.
  • Assures Development staff have appropriate functions in place to provide accurate reporting and tracking.
  • Works closely with COO to develop and implement effective communication strategies and activities to advance the Y’s case for support.
  • Collaborates with the Marketing department to ensure inputs to the annual reports, newsletters, fundraising brochures and reports are accurate, compelling and timely.
  • Attends Board meetings, fundraising events as well as other Branch and community events when appropriate.
  • Represents the Association, as required by the President/CEO, including some evening and weekend commitments.
