Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development,healthy living and social responsibility. Under direction of the CEO and/or the Associate Director, the Sports & Recreation Director is responsible for developing, organizing and implementing high-quality YMCA sports and recreational programs including; pre-school sports, school age sports, sporting leagues for youth and adults and family recreational opportunities. This position can and should positively affect the physical, mental, social and emotional development of YMCA participants and provide opportunities for individuals to participate in fun sports activities.


  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience, including forecasting and budgeting.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in program development, sports league administration and management with demonstrated track record in program growth & development.
  • Strong proficiency in word processing, research and budgeting (Excel).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Organizational skills to simultaneously manage and complete multiple projects/programs.
  • Ability to respond to critical incidents and to act swiftly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and support program staff. He/she must possess the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, and members.
  • ypical requirements within 30 days of hire include; CPR and First Aid and CDL for driving YMCA vehicles.
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings during sports seasons to oversee programs.
  • Must excel at developing professional, working relationships with coaches, volunteers, parents and community partners.

Essential Functions

  • Directs, coordinates and manages sports and recreation program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Expands sports and recreation programming in accordance with strategic plan.
  • Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and live the YMCA mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement.
  • Develops, prepares, and manages the sports and recreation budget . Controls and accounts for the expenditure of funds in accordance with the approved budget.
  • Demonstrates creativity and efficiency in developing new sports programs for people of all ages.
  • Interviews, recruits and manages sports and recreation staff and volunteers. Assists in reviewing, monitoring, motivating and evaluating staff performance.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates with parents, community contacts and volunteers.
  • Assists with sports program registration, creating sports league rosters, attendance records, staff payroll and accounts receivable/payable.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games, practices and programs; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as budget permits.
  • Solicits & secures sports team sponsorships.
  • Organizes and conducts meetings for coaches, staff, parents and volunteers.
  • Organizes transportation for program participants, if necessary.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks.
  • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards.
  • Organizes and hosts community events promoting sports and recreation programs and the YMCA.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of sports and recreation program information.
  • Reviews and processes scholarship applications.
  • Ensures high- quality standards and participants’ safety in all sports and recreation programs.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations and partners.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Responds to all inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Works closely with other YMCA Directors to ensure sports and recreation programs are in alignment to meet long-term strategic goals of the YMCA.
  • Leads sports program committee meetings.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of programs.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
