Job Description

The Decatur Family YMCA, founded in 1877, has a rich long history in Decatur and Macon County Illinois. The most recent facility opened in 2000, with an addition in 2005. The 68,000 square foot YMCA houses one racquetball court; men’s and women’s general and GoodHeart (sauna, steam room, whirlpool) locker rooms; 4 family locker rooms; wellness center, personal training studio, indoor track; full-sized gymnasium; 8 lane pool; 5 multi-purpose studios for youth activities, meetings and group exercise; laundry facility; and a child development center which houses preschool programming and a daycare center. The Decatur Family YMCA is home to the Y-DSC Gators Swim Team. Furthermore, The Decatur Family YMCA operates an offsite sports park with softball/baseball and soccer fields, and concession stand. Millikin University swim team utilizes the Decatur Family YMCA’s 8 lane pool for a practice site and a location for home swim meets.

Current demographics indicate 77.7% White, 17.8% Black or African American, 3.1% From two or more races 2.4% Hispanic or Latino, 1.2%, Asian, 0.7%, From other races, 0.3% American Indian.

  • Volunteer Leadership: 14 Board Members. Additionally, 79 additional volunteers are engaged annually to help the Y deliver its mission.
  • Staff: 13 Full-time and 63 Part-time.
  • Direct reports to CEO: Operations Director, Health Wellness and Aquatics Director, Development and Membership Director, Childcare and Preschool Director, Sports Director Finance and HR Director.

  • Financial Position: Currently a $3,439,635 operating budget, Debt $1,439,226; PPP loan $324,000, Endowment Approx. $1,300,000.
  • Fund Development: 2018 – Annual campaign raised $435,000 and $410,000 in capital. 2019 – Annual raised $480,000 and $526,000 in capital.
  • Financial Assistance Awarded: $114,819 in 2019.

  1. Accredited 4-year college degree.
  2. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization/company.
  3. Proven successful track record of fiscal management for a complex organization exceeding $2.5 M annually.
  4. Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  5. Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and effective in broadening engagement in the community.
  6. Demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  7. Successful fundraising experience in annual campaigns, capital campaigns and endowment, with documented results.
  8. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via Y-USA Training and Leadership Development criterion).
  9. Direct experience supervising multiple levels of diverse staff.
  10. Personal values consistent with the YMCA mission of putting Christian principles into practice.

Essential Functions

Board Expectations and Key Deliverables: The Y board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

  • Provide Strong Fiscal Leadership:

Responsible for setting and achieving financial targets and membership targets and all areas agreed with the Board. Managing the interim budget through the pandemic to ensure a balanced budget going into the next fiscal year. Improve operating performance in all areas of membership, programing, childcare and all other aspects of operations.

  • Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan:

Provide strategic and organizational leadership and have the ability to work effectively with volunteers and key staff to create and develop a strategic plan to address the needs of the Decatur Family YMCA with defined organizational strategies. Work with the board and the appropriate staff to develop a tactical plan for achieving goals and objectives.

  • Demonstrate Mission/Purpose Driven Leadership:

Nurture a mission driven culture by championing a culture of inclusion, integrity, character, and lifelong learning. Actively communicate with members, donors, community and staff. Create a culture of excellence within the YMCA and act as ambassador and advocate for the mission and vision for the YMCA within the community.

  • Lead and Develop a Staff Team:

Promote a work environment that recruits, retains and supports high performing staff and volunteers. Create a plan to build unity and encourage teamwork. Lead by example and remain engaged in staff development and performance.

Salary Range: $92,500 - $120,275

Benefits: Full health benefits, YMCA contributes 8% retirement contribution per eligibility requirements ( Additional benefit details shared with finalists.

Residency Expectation: (CEO is expected to live in the service area. See Service Area)
