Job Description

This position is primarily responsible for the supervision and management of all facets of Healthy Living in the Roxbury branch, member engagement, program delivery and staff development.

This position serves as the Health and Wellness Champion for the branch, assisting each department in providing resources and support to their programs and staff.

The Senior Director of Healthy Living’s portfolio includes, but is not limited to, health and wellness programs for adults, youth, teens, seniors and special populations, personal training both one-on-one and group training. As well as the supervision and management of water and land group exercise programming. As Senior Director, this position will provide ongoing training and coaching for an assigned cohort of YGB personal trainers.

This position reports to the Roxbury Branch Director of Operations.


  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • At least five years experience instructing in related programs.
  • At least five years supervision experience.
  • Experience in personal training, and health and wellness programming.

  • Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff.
  • At times, be able to lift amounts up to 50 lbs.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, implement and oversee all Health and Wellness Programs for every department that reflect the community’s needs and maintain the YMCA’s high standards of quality, safety and character development.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Wellness staff, group exercise instructors, personal trainers and volunteers as programs dictate and budget guidelines allow.
  • Integrate a comprehensive health and wellness program focused on member engagement in all programs for children, youth, teens, adults, and special populations.
  • Provide training & coaching of personal trainers from assigned cohort of branches.
  • Must understand the relationship of the general public, including Public School System, to the Roxbury Branch and Total Health and Wellness Programs and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships.
  • Coordinate annual Road Race (Dimock) and special events. (Healthy Kids Day)
  • Develop and implement annual budgets for assigned program areas, and manage agreed upon budgets within operating guidelines.
  • Responsible for program and membership enrollment, retention, evaluation, payment records, and reporting of records.
  • Oversee all purchases and maintain department related supplies within budget guidelines and maintain a clean and safe program area.
  • Participate in staff meetings, Board of Director meetings, and professional training as appropriate.
  • Attend appropriate quality team as it relates to Total Health.
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA’s mission and goals.
  • Act as a role model and incorporate character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into the daily operation of the fitness department.
  • Assume other duties deemed necessary by supervisor.

Required Certifications

Must be certified personal trainer and certified in at least one area of Group Exercise
