Job Description

Under the direction of the Associate Branch Executive Director, the Fitness & Personal Training Director is responsible for the growth and success of healthy living programs and services, with an emphasis in small group training, personal training, and wellness center floor staff. The Fitness & Personal Training Director is a leader and supervisor to all staff in the healthy living department and is seen as the branch’s main fitness coach, both to members and training clients, and throughout the Franklin, MA community. S/he is responsible for upholding service and engagement best practices by developing their teams of personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and wellness center floor staff, while aggressively expanding the Y’s impact through revenue generating programs.


  • Bachelor’s degree in in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Human Services, Recreation, Business or equivalent.
  • Passion for fitness, and ability to communicate the value and impact of personal training, group exercise and wellness to members and clients.
  • 3-5 years of fitness experience (personal training, group exercise, senior fitness, and/or youth programs)
  • 2-3 years of experience in personal training sales, membership sales and/or customer service
  • 2-3 years of proven experience in staff/volunteer supervision
  • A nationally recognized personal training certification (ACE, NSCA-PT, ACSM or equivalent).
  • Budget management experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to member service, with a willingness to consistently exceed expectations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications, as well as Stewards of Children child protection certification, required within 60 days of employment

Essential Functions

  • Launch new small group and personal training programs. Essential roles include engaging in personal training sales, ensuring program quality to retain clients, executing personal trainer staff development and training, providing personal training coaching sessions as needed, and creating a unique client experience.
  • Assist in the implementation and execution of marketing and social media efforts as they pertain to promoting upcoming special events, increasing enrollment in training programs, and/or launching new group exercise classes or wellness programs.
  • Develop schedules for personal training and wellness center floor staff, and goals for all staff members of the fitness department.
  • Audit day to day functions of the personal training and wellness center floor staff to make sure staff are adhering to all expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Group Exercise Coordinator to ensure quality of the branch’s group exercise program, supporting instructors and encouraging members to participate in appropriate classes.
  • Create new health and wellness programs focusing on emerging needs, especially for families and ages 55+, and follow through to see proven results.
  • Create a welcoming environment with clients, members and potential members to promote customer service, sales and retention.
  • Model team expectations by interacting and observing staff members, checking the details of member experiences, making recommendations and proactively solving problems.
  • Encourage and solicit member feedback with (online member comment cards) and other customer care techniques. Supervises and follows up on member requests and comments.
  • Inspect equipment regularly and ensure that fitness area and equipment is cleaned and maintained appropriately.
