Job Description

The Director of Healthy Living will successfully lead the fitness & wellness department, providing quality programming and member engagement.

The Director of Healthy Living will provide the leadership necessary to advance the mission of the organization and is responsible for the development, instruction, retention, maintenance, and staffing of all health and wellness functions at the YMCA including, but not limited to: Group Exercise Classes, Strength and Cardiovascular, Personal Training; Floor Trainers, Fitness Assessments, and Youth Fitness Programs.


  • The preferred candidate will have (5) five years' experience in the fitness industry with at least (2) two years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college/university in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Personal training certification through a reputable organization (i.e. ACE, ACSM, NASM).
  • Acquire CPR, First Aid, AED, and 02 within 60 days of hire.
  • YMCA experience strongly preferred
  • Must be a people person with the ability to build relationships with and among members.
  • Enthusiastic team player and healthy role model with a solid understanding of the YMCA Mission, Membership & Wellness programs.
  • Knowledge and successful experience and skills in staff supervision, fitness programming, marketing and promotions.
  • Self-motivated, strong leadership, excellent oral and written communication skills, and good administrative skills.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepares an annual budget for the department and ensures that the budget is managed effectively.
  • Supervises all fitness department staff and provides bi-annual reviews for each staff member.
  • Recruits, trains, evaluates and supervises Fitness Floor Staff, Group Exercise Instructors, and Personal Trainers
  • Supervise fitness testing and evaluations and perform testing and evaluations on a regular basis.
  • Develops cardiovascular and strength programming specifically for the Adult membership.
  • Develops and supervises a program to connect and engage new members.
  • Responsible for special events, wellness events and creating a positive culture rooted in the YMCA mission, values and voice.
  • Spends time regularly “on the floor” helping members with equipment, providing information, learning names and getting acquainted with members.
  • Develops a recruitment plan for volunteers and involves volunteers in all phases of the fitness program including special events and other services.
  • Leads and trains staff so that the YMCA wellness department meets the highest standards of cleanliness on an ongoing basis.
  • Leads wellness staff meetings and assists with full staff meetings as needed.
  • Ensures all staff are certified with YMCA fitness training.
  • Maintains current fitness, CPR, and First Aid certifications of the Fitness Staff
  • Finalizes and approves overall monthly fitness personnel schedule
  • Responsible for annual fundraising for the wellness department.
  • Maintains current certifications and teaches classes in health, fitness, strength training and youth and family fitness on a regular basis.
  • Assists with health fairs, membership appreciation events, and other major events as needed.
  • Maintains or delegates appropriately administrative business procedures of the department
  • Maintains current certifications in Personal Training, Group Fitness, First Aid, CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration
  • Focuses on membership service, retention and recruitment as an everyday segment of the job.
  • Other duties, responsibilities or tasks as assigned

Required Certifications
