Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Associate Family Center Executive Director at the YMCA of Central Virginia stewards the Y’s cause, promoting and protecting the brand and reputation as a global, inclusive organization within the community. The Associate Family Center Executive Director oversees assigned areas of the operation and participates in volunteer and staff development, financial development, and collaboration with community stakeholders. The Associate Family Center Executive Director also helps to make and implement decisions related to all assigned areas of responsibility within the framework of the YMCA of Central Virginia’s purpose, policies, and goals.


  • Bachelor's degree in human services, recreation, business or a related field, or equivalent, preferred.
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team Leader certification preferred.
  • Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Ability to direct assigned operations including volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.

Essential Functions

  1. Develop and retain a team of Aquatic, Fitness, Membership, Property and Outreach professionals that deliver high quality, fiscally sound membership and programs.
  2. Grow and expand program impact through aquatics, fitness, and outreach programs throughout the service area.
  3. Strengthen partnerships and collaborations with Lynchburg Businesses and businesses in the surrounding communities.
  4. Raise awareness and support for quality programs through community relationships and public engagement.
  5. Successfully lead the Family Center in annual giving campaign.
  6. Exceed budget income by 3%, Manages the budgeting process so that resources are devoted to top priorities and strategic objectives. Ensures operating budgets meet or exceed targets. Recommends adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation and submits reports on current operations. Budget Magnitude: $2,650,952.
  7. Promote a culture of safety through intensive, regular trainings
  8. Lead all Group X class schedule/training for the Downtown Y. Work alongside the other Family Center coordinators for consistency of class schedule and utilization of staff.
