Camp Description

Camp Y-Koda is an 80 acre camp located just west of Sheboygan Falls bordered by the Sheboygan River to the north and east. The camp was founded in 1969 by the Sheboygan County YMCA and has been offering summer camp experiences ever since. Camp Y-Koda features a beautiful stretch of the Sheboygan River for canoeing, kayaking, tubing and nature studies. The property has a low and high ropes course complete with a zip line and forty foot climbing wall. Camp Y-Koda also features a swimming pool, four acre lake, bb gun and archery range, basketball and volleyball courts, playground, soccer field, arts & crafts center and a camp store. In the off-season Camp Y-Koda offers a wide variety of programs for families, children, adults, schools, corporate retreats and team building, facility rentals and other organized groups.

Job Description

As a camp counselor they are responsible for being a cabin leader of a group of 12-18 children (ages vary from 4-16). The counselor works with a new group each week for day camps or specialty camps or taking groups on field trips, which can be found on our website or in the Summer Camp Brochure. Pre-camp training begins in late May/Early June going into our 11-week camp program (June 14-August 27, 2021). This job is only Monday-Fridays with full-time like hours during the day time.


  • Must be at least 18 years old before June 14, 2021
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be willing to get lifeguard certified. Training is available for those who successfully pass the lifeguard pre-skills test. Lifeguard certification covers lifeguarding, CPR, AED, & first Aid.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must work a minimum of 40 hours or more per week
  • Must have the physical ability to lead & participate in camp activities, including, but not limited to: row boating, lawn games, building campfires, swimming, team-building exercises, physical games, & activities
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions such as rain & 70-90 degree weather
  • Ability to relate & communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social & economic segments of the community

Essential Functions

  • Participate in staff training, meetings, all family programs and overnights, camp activities, fundraisers and promotions.
  • Complete and submit daily attendance records and timesheets in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Report all accidents and injuries to Summer Camp Director and complete accident and incident reports.
  • Work as a team member throughout the whole camp program. Cooperate fully with the volunteer program and utilize other staff members to assist when necessary.
  • Mentor and help guide Assistant Counselors/volunteers to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  • Increase campers’ understanding of the natural environment and their responsibility to it. Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining the quality of supplies, equipment, and materials. Report all unsafe and hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc. to the Summer Camp Director.
  • Manage personal time off in accordance with camp schedule and policy. Know and follow the established financial, personnel and business procedures for Camp Y-Koda and the Sheboygan County YMCA.
  • Discover and implement new program ideas within camp objectives.
  • Lead, teach and implement curriculum and activities designed by the camp directors.
  • Stay in constant communication with campers, and respond professionally to parents questions and concerns.
  • Provide skilled and supervised personal instruction to campers in all areas, such as directing songs, skits, stories, sports, games and activities.
  • Assist camp directors in Thursday Night sleepovers and Friday morning breakfast.
  • Provide a positive and authoritative approach to guiding behavior using age-appropriate limits and choices.
  • Follow established positions for correct pool and lake guarding based on the number of staff on deck, number of patrons in the pool, and the activities being held. Place yourself to view entire aquatic area. Be familiar with the activities that take place during guarding shifts. Do not partake in any activity that would take your eyes off the viewing of the pool or lake such as socializing, reading, studying, or sleeping.
  • Follow pool opening and closing procedures as stated in the YMCA Staff Manual and Lifeguard Certification Course. Remain on duty until relieved by another certified lifeguard. Never leave the pool unguarded. Ensure all doors and gates are locked and secured when closing the pool.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of all campers at all times, including overnights, camp travels/transportation, and extended care.
  • Know and follow correct camp procedures, including those for bus, extended care, and overnights. Assist campers with emotional adjustments, personal growth, and teach respect toward others.
  • Maintain a clean, neat and safe group campsite and assist in keeping the entire camp facility clean.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities and motivate campers to participate in programs to their greatest ability.
  • Provide a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure the operation of a high-quality summer camp and children’s program.
  • Increase and promote the camper’s understanding of the YMCA core values of Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, and Caring.
  • Follow standards (safety and programming) set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families) and the camp directors.
  • Uphold and exemplify the YMCA staff code of conduct.

Required Certifications

Current First Aid, CPR, AED and Lifeguarding certification.


$365.00 - $385.00

Other Compensation

Camp staff are paid a flat rate of $365 - $385 per week (about $1,460 - $1,540 per month).
