Job Description

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Aquatic Director is expected to provide leadership in the overall development, implementation, promotion, and administration of the aquatics programs that are responsive to the needs of the community; ensure that aquatics programs and services are delivered with high quality in accordance with YMCA standards and statutory rules and regulations; supervise all Aquatic programs; hire, train, schedule and supervise of all Aquatics Staff; responsible for development and implementation of Aquatic Budget.



Wet and/or humid, high levels of noise, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and possible exposure to high sunlight during summer months.


Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information and to convey detailed, spoken instructions to staff, members, and volunteers accurately, quickly, and loudly; ability to perceive the nature of sounds by ear; running quickly on land then safely entering the water; advanced swimming ability; surface diving and swimming underwater to a specific depth; recovering a casualty from deep water to the surface; towing a casualty to a point of exit from the water; lifting, carrying or/or dragging a victim to a point of safety; Ability to sprint on land; ability to lift and carry over 100lbs underwater; ability to pull and drag large objects; ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; ability to tread water for long periods of time; ability to clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.


• 21 years of age with Bachelor’s degree. Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications and swim lesson or lifeguard instructor certification with 2 years of related experience.

Essential Functions


• Monitor all aquatic programs and facility. Ensure program quality and monitor staff performance and member service. Develop relationships with members and obtain regular feedback on programs. Recommend program enhancements to ensure that member needs are being met.

• Ensure the swimming facility is meeting or exceeding the Aquatic Safety Standards.

• Facilitate monthly in-service meetings that include skill review.

• Supervise staff and ensure appropriate staffing of pool. Coordinate breaks and rotate staff.

• Develop high-quality aquatics programs, including swim lessons and water fitness that meet the needs of the community. Ensure quality program delivery by certified staff and effective use of resources including staffing.

• Ensure safety and prevent injuries by supervising pool area. Ensure no distraction or interference with the ability to hear or see signs of distress.

• Maintain accurate records, certification binder, pool logs.

• Administer first aid to victims using OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Universal Precautions. Provide immediate care to sustain life until Emergency Medical Service arrives.

• Maintain current certifications. Maintain physical fitness. Perform endurance swims, rescue procedures upon request.

• Lead the aquatics staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment. Respect others by arriving on time and in accordance with schedule.

• Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.

• Provide excellent service to members and participants. Communicate all pool rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.

• Maintain pool logs, incident/accident reports, locker room checks and other documents as required.

• Ensure safety and cleanliness in pool area.

• Perform pool maintenance duties in accordance with OSHA Hazardous Materials Precautions. Perform water quality testing.

• May be required to pursue POOL Operator or CPO certification and backwash pool filtration system and monitor pool chemicals

• Lead by example at all times. Interact with a high level of professionalism and accountability.

• Serve as a member of the management team and Director on Duty for the facility.

• Actively campaign for the Annual Campaign and work to develop donors and volunteers.

• Perform other related duties as required.

Required Certifications

Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications and swim lesson or lifeguard instructor certification with 2 years of related experience. AFO/CPO Certification
