Job Description

Under the guidance and direction of the Executive Director, the Health & Wellbeing Director is responsible for building a team to best deliver health and wellness options, to include: personal training growth, innovative programming, group fitness for all levels and ages, on-boarding and retention of staff and members, outreach in the local community, healthy living engagement, and development of programming outside our walls. The Health & Wellbeing Director will represent the YMCA of Southern Arizona in a positive, professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient and courteous service and will display and encourage the character traits of caring, responsibility, honesty and respect in the fulfillment of all job duties.


1. A bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field preferred.

2. Must have experience in recruiting, training and motivating people and must understand the importance of retention.

3. Strong supervisory and leadership skills must have been obtained and demonstrated through past job experiences.

4. Minimum of 21 years of age.

5. Minimum of three years’ experience.

6. Ability to teach most offered health & well-being group exercise classes.

7. Certification(s) in Group Exercise from nationally approved accredited organization is required within 3 months of hire (ACE or AFAA) Certification(s) in other classes is highly preferred.

8. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

9. Complete all online courses within seven (7) days of hire.

10. Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends as dictated by business needs.

11. Possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

Essential Functions

1. Develops the annual operation objectives and plans for health & wellness and other assigned program responsibility.

2. Recruits, trains and supervises Health & Wellness staff and volunteers.

3. Reviews and evaluates staff performance.

4. Prepares the annual budget for the health & wellness department.

5. Promote membership enrollment through direct service and building supervisor responsibilities and foster leadership development by encouraging members to be involved in committees and other volunteer roles.

6. Interpret YMCA policy, mission and objectives to members, employees, lay leaders and community.

7. Facilitate weekly staff meetings. Meet as needed with key program coordinators.

8. Actively pursue training, learning opportunities, and certifications as they relate to job responsibilities.

9. Assist the Director with the Annual Community Support Campaign to increase staff, members, guests, and volunteer awareness of the YMCA’s philanthropic endeavors.

10Evaluate and deliver consistent, innovative, and high energy group fitness programming and special events.

11. Proactively taking lead in Wellness Center as far as all areas are concerned (i.e. staff development, equipment needs, Health & Wellness programs, appearance of room, response to members, broken equipment and cleanliness).

12Maintain group exercise schedule and flyers both for the member services desk and on the YMCA website along with promoting health and well-being programs through social media.

14Perform other related duties as assigned.
