Job Description

The Director of Communications and PR is responsible for advancing the YMCA of San Francisco brand position by developing, implementing and reporting on both internal and external communications and public relations.

As an integral member of the Marketing and Communications team, this individual will help drive the success of the Y in fundraising, communications, public relations and special events.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old
  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Journalism, Communications or related field with 5 years or more of experience as a marketing and/or communications professional
  • 2+ years supervision experience
  • Exceptional communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person with individuals small and large groups, and online
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Specialized Skills

  • Experience in Public Relations including drafting press releases, pitching media and developing long term media relationships. (Writing samples will be requested.)
  • Proven track record creating multi-media marketing content for social media, promotional materials, fund-raising and internal communications
  • Expertise creating and managing website content, with an understanding of web analytics and search engine optimization. (Drupal administrative experience desirable.)
  • Proficient in Adobe suite (InDesign and Photoshop)
  • Proven ability to be an innovative, creative, proactive and self-directed team player who works in a fast-paced environment and meets deadlines
  • Ability to work in an inclusive and collaborative manner with a wide range of work styles/perspectives and all levels of branch employees
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.)
  • Demonstrated organizational, project management, analytical and critical thinking skills, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Technical proficiency to create email communications with dynamic data using marketing automation software.
  • Demonstrated skills in event management and communications.

Essential Functions

  • Enhance and implement proactive communications strategy to advance understanding of the YMCA of San Francisco’s community impact with internal and external audiences
  • Develop and execute media plan to include editorial calendar
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with media and Y spokespeople to support and strengthen communications
  • Write and edit articles, press releases, media advisories, statements, media pitches, talking points, blogs, social media content
  • Manage budget for all owned projects, including but not limited to fundraising campaigns, collateral production and contracted services
  • Develop content and key messages to support all marketing initiatives and provide extensive editing services to ensure quality and brand consistency in all communications
  • Create and update website content and user experience, ensuring its ongoing usability, relevance and accuracy
  • Provide communications support for fund-raising initiatives and related events
  • Strengthen public relations activities by creating opportunities to raise visibility and increase understanding of the Y's nonprofit status and how the Y benefits the community. Incorporate the Y's mission, key messages and Y stories into communications
  • Identify local award opportunities for the Y organization and staff, and direct the application process including event follow up
  • Identify and develop testimonials and Y stories from members, volunteers, donors and staff for use throughout our communications
  • Use metrics and reporting to measure reach and success of communication efforts

Other duties

  • Uphold YMCA branding guidelines. Act as a branch resource in YMCA brand compliance
  • Participate in Association-wide projects and events when needed
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management and Y required trainings
  • Contribute to and maintain a professional work environment by demonstrating integrity, promoting teamwork and fostering positive communication
  • Demonstrate the Character Counts values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff

$67,000.00 - $75,000.00
