Job Description

Provides direct leadership, instruction, scheduling and motivation for lifeguards in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety.

  • 21 years of age or older
  • One or more years’ experience working in an aquatics supervisory position including program development and budget management
  • Ability to train lifeguards
  • Must possess strong organization and management skills
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Ability to relate well and communicate effectively and relate to a diverse group of individuals, in all circumstances
  • Experience managing and monitoring budgets
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Pass a comprehensive background check
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
  • Passion for high standards and believes in the YMCA mission of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility
  • The following are preferred but may be acquired after hired:
  • YMCA Lifeguard Instructor or equivalent
  • Professional rescuer CPR/AED
  • Emergency oxygen administration
  • First Aid
  • YMCA of the USA Pool Operator on Location (POOL) or equivalent
Required certifications at time of hire:
  • YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent

Essential Functions

  • Attends staff meetings and training's as required and completes all on-line training's which include child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire
  • Follows all association hiring/coaching policies including posting open positions in the Newton Application Tracking System, tracking applications and following new hire training/on-boarding procedures.
  • Supervise lifeguards and support individual growth by on-going coaching which will occur daily and will also include 30-60-90-day check ins and anniversary check in
  • Work with Safety Specialist on agendas for all lifeguard in-service training'sand meetings to ensure staff is current on training needs and development
  • Assist Safety Specialist in recruitment, on-going training, development, and evaluation of lifeguards
  • Be accountable for scheduling and coverage of all assigned lifeguard shifts
  • Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete
  • Assume regular lifeguard duties and shifts as needed
  • Coordinate substitute procedures for staff; record all changes and maintain up-to-date staff schedule
  • Accurately approve assigned time cards in required time frame

  • Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youths
  • Ensures that safety procedures are always followed

  • Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment
  • Works collaboratively with Facility Coordinator to maintain and review accurate records of pool chemical levels according to facility plan

  • Follows guidelines and deadlines outlined by Communication & Marketing Specialist regarding marketing, membership and retention activities
  • Manages the budget for assigned area(s), follows guidelines and meets deadlines outlined by Finance Director
  • Submits hours worked accurately on electronic time card; within timelines for supervisor approval
  • Attend weekly branch leadership meetings and occasional association leadership meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
