Job Description

The YMCA of Central Florida seeks a motivated and experienced leader Camp Director to oversee our 60-acre residential Camp Wewa. This is a full-time, year-round management position located near Orlando in the neighboring City of Apopka, Florida. For more than 60 years Camp Wewa has been helped children and young adult staff grow in spirit, mind, and body. There is a rich history and tradition of adventure and exploration that form the foundation of an incredible camp program.


The Camp Director will build on existing momentum to move help move the program to the next level of service and operational excellence. The successful candidate is responsible for overall camp operations, including the recruitment and retention of both campers and staff. She/he will develop long range plans to ensure the continued success of the camp, including marketing, program, communications and superior customer service strategies. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills savvy to promote the YMCA mission and Camp Wewa initiatives. They will evaluate program and service quality, institute corrective action and ensure key goals are established and met. She/he is responsible for ensuring a clean and safe environment for all participants and staff that values diversity and inclusion. The ideal candidate is a self-starter and team-motivator, a pied-piper who is passionate about creating a first-class camp experience. Experience in the camp sector with demonstrated program development and revenue generation is important. The ability to work in close quarters with colleagues, to laugh and absorb the pressure associated with this lifestyle job is essential.

1.Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree preferred.

2.Minimum 5 years’ experience managing residential camp operations.

3.Proven success in fiscal management, marketing, fund-raising, program management, relationship building, facility operations and risk management.

4.Experience developing community partnerships and volunteer committees.

5.Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with summer and year-round camp staff, senior management and volunteers.

6.Experience creating exciting, cutting edge camp programs and associated budgets and implementation plans/timelines.

7.Demonstrated ability to lead a team and multi-task under pressure.

8.CPR w/AED and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.

Essential Functions

1.Manage and oversee the daily operation of the resident camp.

2.Design, deliver and evaluate all facets of camp programming and ensure consistent, quality implementation.

3.Recruit and retain all camp staff including senior leadership, counselors, specialists and adjunct support/admin personnel.

4.Establish an effective, thoughtful and engaging orientation training program.

5.Develop performance goals and metrics that include regular assessment of year-round and seasonal staff performance. This includes annual and seasonal performance evaluations and management of staff meetings.

6.Remain current on the developmental needs of youth and young adults.

7.Develop, design and implement programs and activities appropriate to camper and staff populations.

8.Design, implement and analyze annual and ongoing seasonal evaluation tools that ensure open and transparent feedback from youth, families and staff.

9.Maximize facility and program usage during out of summer season periods. Supervise staff responsible for rental or YMCA group activities.

10.Create and implement a robust recruitment protocol that drives camp growth and leverages the multiple Family Centers within the YMCA of Central Florida family.

11.Develop a meaningful budget in cooperation with supervisor and monitor/approve purchases via a protocol that meets Association guidelines.

12.Ensure that all Association, state and other mandatory guidelines are met.

13.Collaborate with the YMCA risk management department, oversee onsite employee safety initiatives and ensure risk exposure is identified and resolved. Ensure all staff are current with required certifications.

14.Provide leadership and understanding of the mission of the YMCA of Central Florida to staff, members and the community. Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.

15.Serve as a member of the Association leadership team; actively participate on committees and serve as a subject matter expert to support overall Association objectives
