Camp Description

YMCA Camp Potawotami has provided friendship and fun, challenges and character-building in a beautiful, safe environment for over 90 years. Located in Northeast Indiana, LaGrange County is about 40 miles north of Fort Wayne. The campground includes beachfront on the shores of Blackman Lake, over 210 acres of woodlands, meadows, wetlands and hiking trails for you to explore.

Job Description

TheYMCA Camp Potawotamiis seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals interested in serving this summeras a camp coordinator. Position starts April 13, 2020 through October 30, 2020.

During the summer season they will oversee the skill class and organized recreation schedule for campers and staff, working closely with the summer camp director to manage all aspects of staff appreciation events, professional development and social events throughout the summer. In the spring and fall season they will serve as one of the lead staff members for classes and activities such as: lake study, tree study, archery, teambuilding, low ropes, compass, pioneer living, wetlands and other activities; other duties can include evening programs, program maintenance, school visits, professional/peer development,trainings and conferences, community involvement, staff training, and working with retreat guests.

The position requires mature responsibility, creativity, and a strong commitment to the YMCA mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21years of age.
  • At least one year of college is strongly preferred.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and flexible.
  • Comfortable speaking with parents and communicating effectively with children.
  • Successfully work with a team.
  • Strong knowledge of overnight camping.
  • Previous experience and certification in camp program areas (lifeguarding, high ropes, archery) is a plus.
  • Willing and able to receive training in order to provide a safe and fulfilling summer camp experience
  • Able to fulfill all demands in spirit, mind, and body as a summer resident camp counselor
  • Positive, service-oriented attitude serving diverse groups of campers in regard to age, ethnicity, gender, race, economic status, religion, etc.
  • Team player willingto contributeto the culture, mission, and values of the YMCA

Essential Functions

Summer Season:

  • Oversee the skill class and organized recreation schedule for campers and staff.
  • Work closely with the summer camp director to manage all aspects of staff appreciation events, professional development, andsocial events throughout the summer.
  • This position will be the point person for coordinating arrival and departure travels for international staff, as well as planning times and events for the international staff to get out of camp on their time off.
  • Will be a key mentor for staff and will design and implement a staff in-service training schedule to continuously coach the staff throughout the whole summer (topics canincludebut are not limited to, homesickness, teambuilding activities, managing difficult behaviors, etc.).
  • Coordinate with at least one partnership camp.
  • Rotate with other coordinators to be on call at least one night a week.
  • Assist in managingthe dayto day logistics and help coordinate subs for skill classes, drivers to/from pharmacy or urgent care and troubleshoot any other obstacles that may arise.
  • Must have previous leadership and/or staff supervision experience.

Spring/Fall Season:

  • Serve as one of the lead staff members by leading classes and activities such as: lake study, tree study, archery, team building, low ropes, compass, pioneer living, wetlands, and other activities.
  • Other Duties: Evening programs, program maintenance, school visits, professional/peer development,trainings and conferences, community involvement, staff training, and working with retreat guests.
  • During the spring/fall season serving as the camp liaison between select school and retreat groups along with rotating with other coordinators to be on call at least one night a week.
  • In the spring work on preparations for summer camp, staff training, and staff events.
  • In the fall plan and execute Fall camp, assist with budgeting and assist with the rehiring of staff.

Hourly

$8.25

Other Compensation

$335 per week with room and board included. On-site laundry and internet included. Employment is April 13, 2020 through October 30, 2020.
