YMCA Camp Potawotami has provided friendship and fun, challenges and character-building in a beautiful, safe environment for over 90 years. Located in Northeast Indiana, LaGrange County is about 40 miles north of Fort Wayne. The campground includes beachfront on the shores of Blackman Lake, over 210 acres of woodlands, meadows, wetlands and hiking trails for you to explore.

Job Description

TheYMCA Camp Potawotami is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual interested in serving as our Outdoor Education and Waterfront Coordinator - starting April 13, 2020 through October 30, 2020.

Reporting to the Program Director, they will be responsible in the summer working with program directors to assist in providing training, supervision, and evaluation to staff & lifeguards leading waterfront activities during our Spring & Fall Outdoor Education/Group Service Seasons as well as our Summer Camp Season.

This position will supervise in conjunction with the Outdoor Education Director all waterfront operations In the Spring/Fall Season they will serve as one of the lead staff members by assisting in coordinating school visits and being the onsite contact for select schools. This person will also be leading classes and activities that are offered at the waterfront such as canoeing and lake study, but may also lead a wide variety of other classes: tree study, archery, team building, low ropes, compass, pioneer living, wetlands, and other activities.

Qualifications

  • Must be over 21 years of age
  • Organized, flexible, and detail-oriented
  • Comfortable speaking with parents and communicating with children
  • Successfully work with a team
  • Have strong knowledge of overnight camping
  • Previous experience and certification in camp program areas (lifeguarding, high ropes, archery) is a plus

Essential Functions

Summer Season:

  • Assist in providing training, supervision, and evaluation to staff & lifeguards leading waterfront activities during our Spring & Fall Outdoor Education/Group Service Seasons as well as our Summer Camp Season.
  • This position will supervise in conjunction with the Outdoor Education Director all waterfront operations including program activities (swimming, boating, aqua jump). Oversee 2 water free times for campers and staff, maintain beach and boathouse and serve as a lifeguard when need be. Assist in managing the day to day logistics and help coordinate all camp events, drivers to/from the pharmacy or urgent care and troubleshoot any other obstacles that may arise.
  • Must have previous leadership and/or staff supervision experience.
  • This person will assist with the hiring of the Fall Outdoor Education staff and reach out to fall schools to set-up their visits. Rotate with other coordinators to be on call at least one night a week.

Spring/Fall Season:

  • Serve as one of the lead staff members by assisting in coordinating school visits and being the onsite contact for select schools.
  • This person will also be leading classes and activities that are offered at the waterfront such as canoeing and lake study, but may also lead a wide variety of other classes: tree study, archery, team building, low ropes, compass, pioneer living, wetlands, and other activities.
  • Other Duties: curriculum development, evening programs, program maintenance, school visits, professional/peer development,trainings and conferences, community involvement, staff training along with rotating with other coordinators to be on call at least one night a week.
  • In the spring work on opening the beach for the year, updating lesson plans, contacting schools and preparationsfor staff training.
  • In the fall coordinate with schools, update curriculum, recruit schools, assist with budgeting and assist with the rehiring of staff.

Required Certifications

Previous experience and certification in camp program areas (lifeguarding, high ropes, archery) is a plus

Hourly

$8.25

Other Compensation

$335 per week with room and board included. On-site laundry and internet included. Employment is April 13, 2020 through October 30, 2020.
