Job Description

The Sports and Youth Development Director is responsible for the day to day planning, development, organization, budgeting, staffing, implementation and administration of all curriculum and program activities for youth/adult sports and families. The Director will also work with the Department Head – Youth Development to help oversee/manage Youth and Government, Summer Camp/Sports Camp, Childcare, and all Special Events. This position calls you to assume a leadership role Annual Campaign, be present at all Special Events, be able to develop and innovate current Youth & Teen programs/ideas. It is the responsibility of the Youth Development and Sports Director to assure program quality and safety for all participants along with the research, development and promotion of all above program areas.


•At least 21 years of age with a preferred - Degree or currently working towards an undergraduate degree

•Previous experience working in Sports, Youth, Teen or Family programs overseeing program development, implementation and supervision of staff.

•California Adult, Infant, and Child CPR and First Aid Certifications

•Complete necessary trainings under Leadership Competency Model to fulfill “Team Leader” level within 2 years

•Committed to the YMCA mission and philosophy

•Exemplifies, leads, and trains in Character Development (YMCA 4 Core Values, and Character Counts!)

Essential Functions


I. Fiscal Management

1.Responsible to learn/write YMCA development, implementation and corrective action of the budgets within the Sports, Family, and Youth Development Programs.

2.Responsible to understand the monthly variances reports of the job requirements listed above.

3.Responsible for achieving revenue and expense targets for departments

4.Responsible to support a team in the Annual Campaign

II. Volunteer Development

1. Serves as a staff Liaison for board committees as requested.

2. Responsible for helping recruit quality community/program members to become Committee Volunteers.

3. Responsible for the recruitment and training of the volunteer staff/counselors.

4. Annual Campaign Volunteer recruitment, development and retention.

III. Financial Development

1. Holds a leadership role in the Annual Campaign.

2. Develops and conducts department fundraisers as needed.

IV. Personnel Management

1. Responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of selected department staff.

2. Responsible for annual development of self-training plan in accordance with National YMCA training model.

3. Complete Team Leader Certification

4. Ensures that all staff adheres to Association and Branch policies and procedures, with special attention paid to HR requirements. All staff exhibits the six pillars of character and conducts themselves at all times as pillars of character.

V. Program/Job Management

1. Ensures that all state laws, regulations and licensing requirements are met for all program areas when applicable.

2. Ensures ACA for Summer Day Camp regulations are met.

3. Ensures that program curriculum is current and cutting edge.

4.Maintains and updates table files for Active - FlexRegistration

VI. Facility Management

1. Ensures that all program areas are clean and well maintained.

2. Daily inspects department for maintenance and safety issues. Reports issues to Facility Director and immediate supervisor.

3. Responsible for implementation of the safety program for the department.

4. Responsible for conducting department safety drills.
