Job Description

The Director of Development is responsible for providing leadership in financial development to advance the YMCA’s mission through annual giving, government and foundation grants, endowment bequests and gifts, and capital campaigns. Assists the CEO in developing an actively engaged fundraising volunteer board of directors, and in positioning the YMCA as a preferred organization for the investment of donations within the local community. Serves as a member of the President & CEO’s senior executive team, providing strategic leadership in the Association financial development. The Director of Development provides staff leadership to the following committees: Financial Development Committee, Endowment Committee, Gift Acceptance Committee and is the Metro liaison to the Christian Leadership Committee. Must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace. Upon coming on board, the Director of Development will be responsible for hiring a part-time Development Coordinator to assist in the departmental duties.


Experience & Background:

5+ years of progressive fundraising experience in the YMCA (preferred) or another non-profit.Must have the ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Ability to create collateral materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission. Understanding of social media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs. Working knowledge of the YMCA brand architecture, and the compliance requirements. Foundation and government grant writing expertise.

Essential Functions

•Directs and coordinates annual campaign, association capital development and endowment programs, including association-wide special events.

•Serves as primary staff to the Financial Development Committee and other assigned committees of the Board of Directors. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.

•Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.

•Develops systems and manages resources needed to carry out the fundraising plans, including prospecting, solicitation and stewardship. Maintains database resource file on top community leaders.

•Establishes and monitors the financial development department budget for the YMCA.

•Develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the association.

•Provides training in fundraising. Educates, motivates and provides feedback to association leadership related to best practices in the fundraising development process.

•Develops communication plans to ensure members, participants, and the community understand the case for support. Supports the marketing and communication plan; may plan and oversee the association annual meeting, annual reports, newsletters, brochures and reports.

•Reports to the President/CEO and represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required. Supervises a part-time Development Coordinator.

Required Certifications

Education & Certifications:Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.CFRE or equivalent preferred.YMCA Organizational Leader certificate required within three years from date of hire.Current YMCA leadership certification strongly preferred (Team Leader or Multi-Team Leader).
