The Valley is for all and has an infinite capacity to welcome new campers, families and individuals to the Camp Family. Founded in 1919 by Howard Crawford and George Weber, Y Camp began on a small piece of land nestled along the banks of the Des Moines River. Originally a boy’s camp, Crawford, the first Camp Director, began a journey that would lead the Des Moines Y Camp to become one of the premier summer camps in the Midwest and country. With the leadership of nine directors and the generous support of alumni, community members and volunteers, Y Camp now serves over 13,000 people a year and spans nearly 400 acres of the breathtaking Des Moines River Valley.

Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Oversees assigned areas at the Des Moines YMCA Camp, which may include staff supervision, program development, marketing, community relations, financial development, maintenance of programs, hiring, training and supervision of staff for Overnight, Family and Day Camp. Participates in volunteer and staff development, collaborations with community agencies and facility management.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field of equivalent
  2. One to two years related program development and management experience
  3. American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid Certifications or equivalent certifications approved by the YMCA
  4. American Red Cross Blood Borne Pathogens training or equivalent training approved by the YMCA
  5. Y Emergency Procedures Training
  6. Demonstrated computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit, stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, lift up to twenty pounds of weight, climb or balance, to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and use their hands and fingers to handle or feel. Vision abilities required by this job includes close and distance vision and may at times require peripheral vision.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. This position usually works in an office and/or outdoor environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces. This position works a non-traditional work week which may require evening, weekend and additional hours to accommodate management of program activities and representation of the organization at events.

Essential Functions

  1. Develops and directs high-quality camper and family engagement strategies and programs which support camp and Association goals and strategies. May direct camp marketing and communication efforts.
  2. Recruits, hires, trains, develops and directs Overnight Camp and Day Camp seasonal employees and volunteers. Reviews and evaluates staff performance while developing strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  3. Develops, manages and monitors assigned operating budgets to meet and exceed targets. Is responsible for meeting financial goals for corresponding departments.
  4. Establishes plans for the expansion of programs and services in harmony with overall YMCA objectives and the full-time staff team at camp.
  5. Directly leads operations the Summer Camps at the Des Moines Y Camp, which include Overnight Camps, Family Camps and Day Camp. Supports Group Camping and Outdoor Education in non-summer months as needed.
  6. Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses and government entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in central Iowa.
  7. Ensures that camp programming sustainably embraces the value of diversity, inclusion and globalization.
  8. Provides staff support for assigned committees. Provides staff leadership for annual support campaign.
  9. Serves as a member of the YMCA management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.
  10. Provide security and on-site assistance after hours by living in camp provided housing.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
