YMCA Camp Collins is located on the Sandy River in Gresham, Oregon. Our camp has been providing enriching experiences for youth since 1926.

Job Description

Objective: Under the direction of the Group Services Director, the Program Leader for Camp Collins Group Services leads outdoor educational, team/leadership development, recreational activities, and retreat hosting for both children and adults during the fall, winter and spring.

Job Responsibilities: The Program Leader is responsible for leading participants in a variety of program offerings, including team building, group games, initiatives, nature learning, archery, and outdoor living skills. The Program Leader also serves as retreat host while guests are on site. Program Leaders must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the staff code of conduct and the philosophy, goals and objectives of YMCA Camp Collins. This position assumes responsibility for the well-being and safety of all participants, assist in program equipment management and general upkeep as needed.

Salary: $400 Per week plus Room and Board

Job Specifics:

Program Leadership

•Lead recreational and outdoor learning activities as scheduled

•Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in recreation activities such as climbing, bouldering, archery, crafts, biking, leading hikes, and field games

•Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in nature learning programs, nature-based games, environmental education, and outdoor living activities such as fire starting, shelter building, orienteering, and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics

•Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in team/leadership development activities such as team-building games, group initiatives, low element facilitation and high element facilitation as certification allows

•Complete training and demonstrate the ability to lead evening camp activities such as storytelling, campfire skits, indoor games, songs, night hikes and astronomy sessions

Hosting Guest Groups

•Display professional and approachable presence for the duration of retreat guests stay

•Greet group leaders upon arrival, arrange and deliver group orientations

•Complete required facility, equipment, and services set up and take down consistent with group requests

•Host group meals to include set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, clean-up and beverage stations

•Document and file group information, administer and compile group evaluations and conduct retreat follow up tasks as assigned


•Adhere to the onsite living expectations and terms of the camp housing agreement

•Maintain high standards of well-being, safety and satisfaction in all activities for retreat guests

•Understand the need for, and demonstrate a willingness to be an exemplary role model at all times in camp and at other times off-site when representing YMCA Camp Collins

•Demonstrate a strong sense of investment in camp, including the cleanliness of facilities, care of equipment and supplies, and stewardship of the natural environment

•Actively participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings

•Perform light janitorial, maintenance, grounds keeping and office work as needed.

•Assist in areas of housekeeping, maintenance, food service, summer camp, and marketing

•Participate actively in Community Events as assigned

•Perform other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

•Must pass YMCA background check

•Minimum age 18

•CPR, AED, First Aid and Food Handling certification within 30 days of employment

•Customer service experience

•Strong communication skills, positive attitude, flexibility, dependability and ability to work and problem solve as a customer service-oriented member of the camp community is required

Preferred Qualifications:

•Background in outdoor recreational/educational/team development activities, camp experience helpful

•Requires strong communication skills, positive attitude, flexibility, dependability and ability to work and problem solve as a customer service-oriented member of the camp community

•Experience in child development, education, recreation or a related field is preferred

Essential Functions

•Ability to interact with youth and adult guests in a positive manner

•Ability to connect with supporting staff members

•Must be able to lift and carry program area equipment up to 50 pounds

•Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly

•CPR, AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment

•Must be able to walk with groups around all areas of camp

•Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation

•Ability to speak, read and write clearly in English
