Job Description

This position will provide assistance to management of the aquatics facility, aquatics staff and various programs offered within the department. The Assistant Aquatics Director also play a key role in the front line operations of the department and will fill in as needed as a swim instructor, lifeguard, AM guard and deck supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year College or University is preferred;
  • 1-3 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with competitive coaching, swim lesson instructor and lifeguard training would also be beneficial.

1. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Directly manages lifeguard and swim instructor scheduling. Directly involved during swim lesson times for quality control and mentoring. The individual will also be actively seeking member interaction and will be available for member services as they pertain to aquatics programming. Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local laws and YMCA health and safety regulations. Oversees school year and summer rentals. Assists with administrative tasks as requested by Director. Full direction of the Outdoor Center during the summer.

Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, managing, developing, coaching, scheduling, and directing staff and volunteers as needed. Develops strategies to motivate staff. Monitors and updates all required staff certifications. Assists with annual performance appraisals. Leads monthly staff trainings to ensure high quality staff skills and engagement. Conducts safety, certification, and service training for staff.

3. MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Builds relationships with and among members, responds to inquiries and solves problems. Creates a safe and supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new members, and connects members to the YMCA’s cause.

4. BUDGET & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Supports director with department budget as set. Responsible for accuracy of Aquatics Department Payroll. Will keep accurate records of all expenses within our accounting system.

5. FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Works with appropriate branch staff to provide program facilities for members that are clean, safe, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive. Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Will take lead with the daily/weekly/monthly maintenance of the pool systems as needed. Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance. Assist with pool schedules as needed.

6. VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT

Builds and develops volunteer capacity, sharing the social responsibility.

7. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT

Assists in YMCA fundraising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.

Required Certifications

  • Current American Red Cross, YMCA or relevant Swim Instructor Certifications.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR, Lifeguarding and First Aid Certifications.
  • Current Lifeguarding Instructor Certifications preferred or completed within first year of employment.
